I do wonder if those whom think so little of Christianity still buy and accept gifts at Christmas? Do they still take the day off work as a paid holiday? does that not make them two-faced or hippocartes?

No' date=' it doesn't make them two-faced or [i']hippocrites[/i]. You can think very little of Christianity and still recognize that your friends or family may feel differently and allow them to celebrate (and include you in their celebrations) without interference. It would be hippocritical to say, "Don't force your religious views on me" and then impose your non-religious views on them.

If someone says "Merry Christmas" to me, I don't respond, "I don't celebrate Christmas you presumptuous fool!" I simply say, "And a merry Christmas to you too," because their intent is to express something positive. Sure, I prefer "happy holidays," because it's more inclusive, but even if someone told me to have a "joyous Kwanzaa" I'd thank them and tell them the same.

That said, the post definitely doesn't belong in this forum, since it's not about Gibson Acoustics.

Fair enough, Thanks for the sensible answer and you are right this post doesn't belong here.

ksdaddy: I'm not sure those cows are so innocent. Have you seen the way they just stand there chewing their cud and starring. They're up to something.

I'm not Hindu, Moslem, Chinese nor Jewish. But when people I know are celebtrating their own particular holiday or festival it's just good manners to wish them well.

Christmas is a time for Christians to reflect and be thankful. But it's a statutory holiday for everyone. So just chill out.

Let's face it, it's commercialised to death these days and for me quite irritating. My daughter Maud (9) still believes in Father Christmas though which is quite magical for me.

As Dave Allen used to say........

"May your God be with you!"

Methinks some of thou dost protest too much. . .

Whether the post belongs in THIS forum is a valid question.

This is my primary objection.

Anyone who doesn't like the original post could easily let the thread die by NOT posting to it typically do.

Of course this is true. But' date=' if you're gonna put something like this out there you're gonna get a reaction.

to go out of one's way to vent/bash when it's simply suggested that we all should remember the real reason for Christmas.

[/quote']

if it were a simple suggestion offered with good will, i would accept it graciously. Unfortunately, the way it's written, with its use of caps and borderline strident tone, it's tantamount to having the poster standing there poking me in the chest while i try to dodge his spittle. i can smell the sanctimony on his breath. sorry, but i find that objectionable. i have no patience with religious didacts. especially on a guitar forum. just my .02.

Well here we are again It's that time of year when you notice people being extra nice to others' date='and giving gifts and good cheer.I hope we all remember what the true meaning of CHRISTmas really is CHRIST the child was born to be crucified on a cross for all our sins a man that was sinless. Guilty of nothing but Loveing man enough to give up his life so we may be saved. All we have to do is confess our Love for JESUS CHRIST and ask forgiveness of our sins and believe and have Faith in the SON of GOD Amen[/quote']

I too am getting tired of retailers pandering to my CHRISTmas spirit to sell me some gew gaw for my loved ones, then only daring wishing me a Happy HOLLOWdays! (sic)

Obviously christmas is no longer about jesus. Let’s face it: in the war of Santa vs. Jesus' date=' Santa has tasted victory. And I think that is fantastic. Christmas has slowly morphed into a season of caring, charity, joy and goodwill for all people.

Isn’t it way better to have a secular christmas? To have a whole population embrace the spirit and not just a religious minority? Seems pretty obvious to me that the answer is yes. Even the most ardent christian would have to concede the beneficial utilitarian aspect of a universal holiday of goodness.

[/quote']

Sadly, the success or failure of the secular X-mas is measured in dollars, not peace and good will. Most 'money' is on this X-mas being a failure.

CHRISTmas will always be a success if you give more than you receive and practice peace and good will.

In my opinion:

God is omnicient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. He is creator of all that is.

Religion is a man made contrivance to worship God. Being a man made contrivance, whatever the denomination, is suseptible to corruption. God is in the heart, not a building. If you need a building to honor the Great I Am, then God love you. If you don't need a building, the God loves you too.

Merry Christmas.

That's what this country stands for....."Separation of Church and Guitar Forum!!!!!" It's fairly simple.....but I digress......

"Separation of Church and State" is not an American precept. It's French, co-opted by some Americans to be American.. which it isn't.

Universal response for those who don't want to reciprocate when wished a, "Merry Christmas:"

"And a Happy New Year to you too."

It completes an oft recited phrase and disparrages none.

Merry Christmas!

poking me in the chest while i try to dodge his spittle.

Conjures up a disturbing visual.

I despise Christmas. I absolutely hate it. It's nothing but one big money grab. It's been that way for a long time but it gets worse every year. "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" are terms in everyone's vernacular that didn't exist a few years ago. WalMart plays Christmas music beginning about November 3rd. Stress is high, expectations are high, traffic, trampling, sales, phony good will, volunteering one hour in a soup kitchen and ignoring the rest of the year.

Bah.

I am sure that you all heard that a Walmart employee was killed in a "rush to save" on Black Friday in Long Island NY. The doors opened and the employee was crushed. The shoppers were ticked off when they needed to leave the store for the investigation..........they said "We have been waiting so long!"

I playfully say to my kids and my family that I hate Christmas. I work so much harder at my job, all the extra money evaporates into who knows what to satisfy everyones expectations. I usually end up ill at the end of the holidays because of all the stress. My favorite holiday is January 2nd.............all this crap is over.

I like that bumper sticker that says COEXIST. Coexist is spelled out by the symbols of the major religions of the world. Someone once explained to me that "religion" is merely man's way of defining his relationship with GOD. As Rodney King said "Can't we all just get along".

I feel for Cows...........I am in the Dairy Industry =D>

I am so cold... it is -30C out there...

That's like.... -22° Fahrenheit! You're in Winnepeg. What do you expect. You are sending it our way via the 'Alberta Clipper" Brrrrrrr.

Although, 243.15° Kelvin sounds warmer.

Too, 437.67° Rankine sounds even warmer.

Rankine? Where'd that come from? I thought Kelvin was 'absolute'.

However, the rest of your unbolded rant I agree with.... none of which has to do with the religeosity of the day.

I'm Jewish. For many years I felt kind of awkward with the whole month-long orgy of Christmas this, that and the other thing. It's a loud, in-yer-face sort of holiday. There is no out for non-Christians. You're gonna see it and hear about Christmas for a month, whether you want to or not. A few years back I decided to go with it. You know, 'Merry Christmas!' I call out breezily whenever appropriate. It doesn't hurt me and probably adds a pleasant little vibe to someone's day. So Gman, have yourself a merry little Christmas, ok?

Hope you have a wonderful Hanukkah, Jerry.

Yeah, what bothers me most is a lot of Christians aren't willing to accept and honor other people's beliefs and traditions. Note that I said "a lot" and not "all." So yeah, I'll say "Merry Christmas" back to them. They just don't seem to get it that a lot of people aren't of the same religion as themselves. Funny, though, how when I've wished some of my family members (hard core evangelicals) a "Happy Solstice" they are offended at a "Pagan holiday." <sigh>
