Gibson L-5 Strings

Looks like Gibson might have switched to using Vintage Reissue for factory sets on a lot of the archtops, but they do not have a wound G.

which is a bumber cuz I used to like the L5 strings.. ARG!

you could check these out: http://www.juststrings.com/toi-in111.html

or go to juststrings.com and check the various brands they offer, if you look at the details for each product there should be a description tab, that will tell you about the set.

Sympathy doesn't do either of us any good.

I may a try a set of those Thomastik.

Kinda pricey, but that's the only brand my wife will use on her violin.

Most people tell me they are the best strings out there, but not for everyone I spose, cuz I've heard the opposite from a few.

lemme know how you like, I could be up for a set next time I get antsy about flat wounds on my archtops

I just ordered a set. They are round wound, I don't like flat wound strings, I use these on a Heritage 575 and know most folks use flat wound on 575's but I don't like the slimy feel. I'll let you know. Phil

thanks Phil...

about the flat vs round wounds, where I do lots of finger style chord/melody work, the flat wounds seem to fit here as I tend to move around to grab the various voicing needed, I prefer round wounds for all my solid bodies however.

Well I tried the Infeld strings, they aren't Gibson L-5's. I think they're ok I tried a set of 11's because that's what gage of Gibsons I use. They are a too soft and smushy, maybe 12's would work better.

Yup. I share everybody else's pain on this one. I posted this a while back:

http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/100871-l5-strings-stopped-manufacturing/

I can report back now that I've been pulling my hair out ever since. I ended up putting a bunch of different brands, guages, etc on my L5. Went back to TI flats twice. I really like the feel, but I just can't get myself to like the sound...and I've really tried. Tried a bunch of different round wounds, including DAD's pure nickel. They weren't right either. I'm next going to try the half-rounds. But the quest continues.

Incidentally, I usually use DAD's EJ21's on my other electric guitars, including my 335 and I like them for that. I thought they might be too bright for my L5. But if the half-rounds don't do it for me, I might throw a set of those on there and see.

This is a real annoyance. It's more than an annoyance. I feel like my L5 has been compromised. [cursing]

I often wonder why no one (else) talks about La Bella here on the forum, maybe I'm the only one who uses them.

I use La Bella strings exclusively on all my guitars, rounds on my solids and semi's, flats on my archtops, and nylons on the classical.

They make top-shelf strings in many flavors for almost any stringed instrument you can think of.

Anyway, just to give you some idea from what I use:

Archtops - http://www.labella.com/products/800m/

Solids and Semis - http://www.labella.com/products/el-bh/

Classical - http://www.labella.com/products/2001-classical-m/

As for standard flatwounds, look at these - http://www.labella.com/category/products/electric/flat-wounds-electric/

Thanks Larry. Those nickel plated roundwounds look to be exactly the same gauge as the DAD EJ21s. I'll have to put those on my list of strings to try. As for nylon tapes...I haven't gotten myself to like the metal flats so I don't hold out much hope for those. And, since they are much thicker they'd be a little more of an ordeal to set up.
