Thanks Flatters. Been practising a bit. Nice to break out the old plectrum once in a while. I finally found a 346 triangle version of the Dunlop Ultex. It does the thin yet stiff thing that I like without clicking as much as my old celluloid pick. I'm not sure about this recording angle though. As you pointed out last time I posted something, it sounded good, but the bass seems to have dropped off a bit here. The pick doesn't actually do maximum thump in any case, but I swear it does more than I can hear here.

Thank you kindly Running-man. The guitar is a 2011 Woody Guthrie Southern Jumbo.

How old are the strings now, mojo? I agree the bass notes drop off a bit there. Try a couple of different angles... With the iphone I've used in the past I found the best angle to be about 2ft away and fairly central.

The strings are almost as old as the song, PM. I got the guitar in April or May 2011, and it was built in late March of that year. So the strings have been on since then. Only the high e is younger, but that's been on about a year. I get a lot more bass from the position you describe, but play so hard, it also tends to distort. Need to practise softer picking!

That's what I'm hoping.

Roll on 2016...... ;)

Surely they must be pretty cruddy/rusty by now, for uncoated strings I'd have thought they would have disintegrated by now... If I lived closer I would break into your house one night and change those badboys. ;)

sounds great Mojo.......Im guessing you dont waste alot of money on strings. LOL

Thanks DC.

No, I don't waste a lot of money on strings, but where we were in Hungary, you didn't exactly get a vast choice in any case. I wanted 80/20 D'Addarios because they are supposed to be closest to the Gibson strings the guitar came with. The nearest thing they had were 85/15s. Other than that, they had a lot of super-light Martin strings and locally made wires. Delivery charges from online suppliers were a bit high to justify going that route. And I obviously either have very dry hands or don't have the sort of sweat that corrodes acoustic strings. Some of the strings on my beater are 10 years old. My electric strings tend to go a bit more quickly. And, one major advantage of the old strings is that they don't squeak as much when I move around the fretboard. I fear that that side of things might blow my mind in a bad way, PM.

LOL. They're not really rusty. There is a light build up of some sort of wear, but I've only recently noticed it. It may be crud, but it's not crud in the way that I used to get crud on my strings when I was gigging. Not that icky dead skin stuff. Sort of slight blacking of the bronze. The rusty strings are the ones on my old Epiphone Casino which is still in storage. Seriously, my hands must be drier than I thought. When we do reach 2016, I'll want a proper new e string to go with the rest of the set that's in waiting. The original two that were in the packet both pinged when I was putting them on, and I'm not entirely sure of the quality of the local Hungarian string that I ended up replacing them with. Strength yes, cutting volume yes. Tone? Not so sure. Still, I have invested in a string cutter for the first time in my life. The matter of changing the strings is on my mind.

mojo, Really excellent picking and singing! Inspired me to go learn that one. Or learn it 'properly'. You should lookup and learn "Black Diamond Strings" (EmmyLou w/ Guy Clark). I think you might do a really good job on that one too!

Thank you for the compliment, Forty. Will look up the song about every old timer's favourite strings.
