Identify my "The Gibson"

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My mother just gave me my grandfather's "The Gibson", it looks like a banjo. It must be very old, it does not have any serial number, all I can find is "The Gibson" and MADE IN THE U.S.A. and a small writing that says PATENT APPLIED FOR .

Attached are some photos.

Any ideas what model it is?

Thanks in advance

I know next to nothing about banjos, so I did some searches. It took me awhile, but I gradually narrowed it down. It appears to be a 1920's Gibson UB-2 ("Ukulele Banjo" or "Banjo Ukulele"). There was also a UB-1 model, which had a smaller (diameter) head. Here are some links to check out:

There are many more websites devoted to banjos and ukuleles, and hybrids thereof, and history, and artists, and music.
