Help with authenticity and value

Recommended Posts

This is supose to be a Les Paul Deluxe, dated late 70's (1979).

According to the serial (which is almost not readable) it should have been made in the Kalamazoo factory, if it is authentic.

The body of the guitar is not a one piece, but two glued together. It has it shares of dings and markings but was nice to play.

So what do you experts say, is it authentic and what would you value it.

It's not a '79, it's earlier than that. Gibson began using an 8 digit system in 1977. Yours is older, early 70s up to '75. The two pieces of the body (as you stated) is what is known as a "sandwich" body (our terminology, not Gibson's official description). It was common in the early 70s. Whether it's good or not is just opinion and nothing more.

As to value, I would hesitate to put a dollar figure on it... I would think $2500 or so but don't go by that. Look through completed ebay items and that will give you a good realistic number. Copy and paste this into the search:

Gibson Les Paul Deluxe (1970,1971,1972,1973,1974,1975)

I just did it, searched "sold" items only, and they had a range from $1000 to $4200.

There also are "pancake" (not official, too) bodies consisting of two mahogany planks with a very thin layer of maple in between I think.
