JOK Posted January 7, 2014 Share Posted January 7, 2014 Hello, I'm thinking now about buying my first electric guitar. Now my budget allows me to buy guitar with price under 900 dollars. As I am Beatles fan I firstly thought about Epiphone Casino. But also I'm thinking about Gibson Les Paul Junior. I realise that these guitars can not be compared, but i'll be thankful if you give me some advices. Maybe you owned one of this guitar and can share your experience and opinion. As a first guitar, the Les Paul would probably survive the abuse it will surely endure as you learn and I believe it is less expensive, so less loss. clarkuss Posted January 7, 2014 Share Posted January 7, 2014 In the UK you can get a Les Paul Jr and Epiphone Casino for around the same price so I'm guessing it's the same in the USA... I'm also a Beatles fan and have both (3 Casinos). The Casino was my first electric guitar and even after all these years, having owned many guitars, it's still one of my favourites. I like my Les Paul Jr too but it's heavier and bigger neck and frets so not as comfortable as a Casino and with a single pickup, less versatile. If it comes to it, you may be buying used if someone doesn't have them in stock. Sadly, I think that Gibson may have discontinued them after almost 60 years. Somebody please tell me I'm wrong! Willy They also brought out those Les Paul Junior P-90 Special. I'm sure between those and the Satin ones there are a fair few in stores. bobouz Posted January 7, 2014 Share Posted January 7, 2014 The pictured LP Specials were a 2012 model, and came in both satin and gloss versions. I have one in gloss cherry, and it's the best playing Special I've owned. Wonderfully smooth bound neck with a baked maple board that feels similar to ebony, and high build quality overall. The Casino is hollow so can be prone to feedback and don't always react well with electronic distortion. You might be better with a solid body guitar for that stuff... JOK, Yes, but remember that a lot of your sound will have to do with your amp as the P-90s are a given. As Clarkuss stated, Don't forget that the Casinos are hollow body arch tops so it is also prone to feedback depending on the amp. As someone that likes P-90s I also have to admit they can have a 60Hz hum that many do not like. I'm hoping others will chime in as many members possess those guitars. Still, if you would like additional perspective (aside from testing the guitars yourself)... there are also plenty of vids out on youtube. That being said I love my Casino but see it more as a rhythm instrument than a lead instrument. If feasible I would try to find a two pickup guitar for more variety of sound. Clapton used the neck pickup a lot for his 'woman tone' and Page did a lot in the middle position. that's a good point, I had to seek out late 1990s/early 2000s casinos to get one that has the neck join the body at the 17th fret as opposed to the 16th. that one fret makes a big difference imo. By the way, I'm wondering why GC is blowing these gold top Casino's out for that price? Are gold tops not that popular in a Casino? I thought this one was gorgeous, and I would have jumped on it in a second if I hadn't just bought a used Casino on Craigslist this past summer...
