E_danylycha
G'day guys I'm looking to buy my second Gibson and I recently played VOS 330 and it made me sweat profusely as a result of the tone but I'm also eyeing off a les paul 1956 gold top reissue, what are people's thoughts on either of the two and pictures would be great to see as well. Cheers!
mrfett
I'd be inclined to tell you... you have some pretty good taste! They're very different guitars, but both fantastic instruments :-)

They're very different guitars, but both fantastic instruments :-) Yes, you have a very good taste when it goes around guitars, but what hit me were the pillow slips pictured. My ex-wife has of the same design either one pillow slip and one lamp shade, and I still remember where she bought them during the 1990s... I love my other gibson les paul body design and feel but the 330 has that that extra appeal being full hollow body.

Yeah those pillows and the couch have been around a while lol! They were in my wife's office before we had kids, now they're down in my studio :-) I don't mind them because the loveseat/pillows are waaay nicer than the futon I used to have down there :-)

I love my other gibson les paul body design and feel but the 330 has that that extra appeal being full hollow body. I really think that has to come down to what kind of music you're playing and what kinds of sounds you're looking for. If you are playing high volume stuff it's hard to recommend the 330. It isn't anything like the Les Paul. With that said, it's incredibly versatile and short of high volume/high gain applications it's incredibly versatile. I really love it. You have a Les Paul already, so I'd just get the 330 unless you think the feedback will be a show stopper.
mrfett
I see in your sig you have an AC-15. That amp is meant for an ES-330! It's great with EL84 amps!
mrfett
Wow I've almost forgotten how beautiful they are! Are these both yours? Yeah, they're mine :-) I got the R6 used off of Craigslist, it had a few problems so I got a great deal. I bought the ES-330 recently (my only Gibson I purchased new), just used it on a track. It really sounds fantastic! They're very different from one another, despite the similar pickups and neck profiles.
E_danylycha
Well I'm happy to announce that a few weeks ago I sat down with a '56 gold top and a n ES-330 for nearly an hour and the 330 won!..... Both guitars were beautiful aesthetically and tonally but the goldtops tone was a bit thicker and closer to a humbucker than the 330, the 330 for me sound much more open and brighter and the clean tone was to die for! I tried them both on a Fender Blues Deluxe 40w combo and had to take that as well. At this stage I would like to go back and get the goldtop later, the shop assistant and I both agreed that the goldtop will be produced for many years to come but the 330 may fade away again in the near future so it made the 330 purchase even more logical. The ES-330 VOS can vary significantly from sample to sample (like many Gibsons), but a good one is something rather special indeed. If forced to keep only one, for me it would be the ES-330 VOS! Versatile
Personal opinion is in favour of the ES330... It has IMO a richer tonal palette as evinced by the many classic sounds from the 60's etc obtained from it's close relative the Epiphone Casino... Much love for LP's also... There are other P90 loaded options from other manufacturers which may be worth a trial... V

bobouz
Bobouz, in what ways have your seen differences between 330's? Wow, an almost year old thread brought back to life! When I purchased my 330-VOS in 2012, I was able to compare three at the same time. There were major differences in unplugged tone from dark to bright, which tend to transfer to plugged in tone as well. There were also very significant variations in neck profiles. One happened to be smaller overall & much more comfortable in my hands. Two of the three didn't do much for me, but the third was jawdroppingly impressive! I bought one second hand recently. Sunburst with factory bigsby - yes, they've made a few of these. LOVE it all day long. The neck is bigger than I'd like, but aside from that, what a piece. Just tremendous in every way. I'm thinking about buying some of that penis-enlargement cream and rubbing it on my hands so I can handle the 330 neck a little better! Hahahaha! Notes_Norton
Once you've played P90s for a while, everything else sounds dead. And the vibrating body of the archtop moving the P90s under the strings adds a nice complexity to the tone.

AlanC
Thanks 4Hayden. Both are really good. The 330L is particularly good. I bought it by accident. It was sold as a Late 50's reissue but when I worked out it was not I couldnt give it back. The second one is a late 50's reissue with I think has the nick name 'Grant Green'. Both are very different. The Late 50's had a really bad buzz when I bought it which turned out to be a loose switch.
Notes_Norton
The 330L is definitely my first choice. The high fret access is great, but I've heard they are more fragile.
