Gibson Artist
So far, i have tried the standard, the true vintage and just recently, the custom. Was wondering what other versions are there? The funny thing is, i thought the true vintage was the one i would buy if cash permitted until yesterday when i tried a used custom. Wow, oh wow.. The custom just blew me away and it instantly became my favorite. I had thought the TV was king but the Custom really does have a sweet sweet tone. The only thing that bothered me was gold tuners, its a little too gaudy for my taste, normally i never change tuners but in that instance i believe i would. Are there more wood vartiations than those 3? Would love to hear from some of you 45 owners. :)
BigKahune
. Ah, the old - what's a J-45 - can of worms. There's all kinds of variations - mahogany, rosewood, maple, koa, adi tops, 14 frets, 12 frets, etc, etc, etc. I think OWF had a thread on this topic a while back and it came up with a pretty large variation of models. . GuitarLight
How many kinds of J-45's are there? ...Hmmm...seems like that's asking how many kinds of Hummingbirds there are! The Gibson formula is simple. Just make one successful model...and with differing pick guards, colors, woods, body shapes, and so on...you suddenly have 35 more models! The only ones who are not quite sure of the differences, is the customer. And all of them are better than the one before them by $500 to $1000! chasAK
OWF, you need to add the Donovan model. When you hit 50, I thinkyou get some kind of prize. Martin has 9 d28s not counting their 12 string. Anybody know how many j45 models are currently in standard production? An interesting question is what model would like to see the list reduced too? I would opt for the Legend, the standard, the TV(with the choice of adi. or Sitka) and a couple reissues (one with the adjustable bridge). Now I'm up to five of six. That sound reasonable to me! PS I need to add a 12 fret! chasAK

Yorick
Don't forget the J 45N. There was a new one at Sweetwater a couple of years back. Yes, it looked a lot like a J 50.
Gearhead88
The J 45 I bought earlier this year is called the J 45 Northern , a run of 65 instruments made exclusively for Long & Mcquade , a chain of music stores in Canada . Adirondack red spruce top , rosewood back and sides. A sweet sounding and playing guitar ! .

Dave F
Is it really a different model if it is just a different color. It is like saying there are 10 different Fender American Standards Strats because it is offered in 10 colors this year. The D28 is the same as the D28 Ambertone and the D28 Sunburst just color variations. Just applying the same judging standards they're using on the J45
