DukeBerryman
The nut on these guitars is bone and can be ground down into a better nut shape. I highly recommend getting this done - made mine a real keeper:

I highly recommend getting this done - made mine a real keeper: Duke... the nut on my DR500MNA was shaped, slotted and made absolutely perfect. I suppose it may vary from instrument to instrument since I'm sure that operation is still done by hand.
DukeBerryman
Mine was like a block with deep slots. I'm just glad it was bone and could be worked. I just got an IB 1964 Texan, and although the nut is not bone, it's much better shaped. And I don't plan on replacing it with bone. Did put in Tusq pins, though, on both guitars. meanstreak
ya I had to replace the nut on my DR-500M. Way too deep slotted for the high strings. Also replaced the saddle since it was cut too short and came with a shim. Must have been a rookie working the nut and saddle at the factory that day. With the new ones it sounds amazing!
