Vishnu Posted August 7, 2014 Share Posted August 7, 2014 Hi all. I'm new in town. I've come to the forum to attempt to verify a Gibson ES335 I've just purchased. It was sold as an original 1980 Gibson ES335 in a dark burst finish. It looks great and feels heavy & well made. It was advertised as featuring Bareknuckle Mule pick ups. I paid £1600 for it this summer. Problems began when a friend pointed out that there was no visible paper label in the f hole. So I did a quick Google search and found that the subject of this guitars authenticity has been raised on two previous occasions. That got me worried. Is it a Fibson- a clever fake? The number stamped on the back identifies it as having been built at Kalamazoo on Jan 9th 1980. Batch no. 122. A very knowledgable Gibson historian who responded to my original appeal for help told me that for a 1980 model the split coil tap should be placed on the treble lute ( lower horn) and that it should feature a block inlay. Mine has a dot inlay. If he is suspicious that I have paid £1600 for a fake Gibson then so am I. Can any one out there explain 1. Why no paper label. 2. Why a dot inlay 3.
