Hoist one for Scotland today...

Awesome. A country votes for its own independence today. On the ballot:

Should Scotland be an independent country?

And the voter votes yes or no.

Astounding. I know those over there don't understand, but in Amerikur, that would be a sentence of over 500 words, with "descriptive paragraph" following it of at least four times the length trying to explain it. Most of the time, most of the questions put on ballots here require an enormous focus of will in order to vote NO for something you want and YES for something you don't, that's how far they'll go to get their way, whatever it might be.

16 and 17 year olds voting? My god, you can see the Amerikkin politicos clutching their chests at the thought. Give those that will have to live by our decisions a say in them???? Madness!!!

A simple majority carries it. Wait. What? No way. We'd need several groups of stinky white guys older than me to interpret the vote because you know, voters don't know nothin.

I love my country as much as the next guy but I am not blind to her massive flaws when it comes to this kind of thing.

God Bless You all Scotland. And the rest of the UK. If nothing else, you'll have demonstrated clearly just how effed up things are in our particular form of MoneyOcracy. I hope it is a good day for everyone over there, no matter how it turns out.

It's an interesting concept, I grant you.

I haven't lived in Scotland since 1987 ([scared]) and these days don't really know enough in-depth stuff to say whether there are enough folks with the skill and lack of self-interest to govern the place effectively but I'm happy to see the inhabitants are at least being offered the choice to decide for themselves whether or not they wish to be ruled by Westminster.

Back in those days the words 'Incapable', 'Piss-up' and 'Brewery' would have featured prominently in any discussion on the matter. I'm informed that things might be better nowadays.

On the radio it's being suggested that the vote might be as close as the '95 Independence election in Quebec (where the 'No' campaign managed to win by 50.6% to 49.4%).

Whatever the result I'll be giving the Auld Country my best wishes. And I'll probably get the Laphroaig out in any case...

EDIT :

Sounds like a good excuse for a party. (And the sheep are nervous!)

I really must share this joke posted by Digger over in the Epi Lounge...

Hear about the Scottish Rolling Stones tribute band?

They always kick off their set with "Hey McLeod, Get Offa My Ewe."

In general I don't tell other folks how to run their countries or what to vote for because I know enough to know that I don't know enough to know much about what to know.

But there's this to consider....

I missed this slightly earlier.

You have to love Irvine Welsh.......the man's an absolute hoot!..........[lol]

mmmm...Laphroaig....

Wait for it....Wait for it..........

I was thinking of you Pip.

I didn't realize you had been away so long.

Good to see the huge interest reflected in the numbers registered to vote.

This vote is being watched very closely here. As you mention we had a similar situation with Quebec here.

This may stir up new emotions for it.

Not knowing the situation there I'm in no position to have an opinion.

But knowing the situation here I do have an opinion, which is neither here nor there so I have no reason to express it.

I wish your homeland all the best.

Freedom from oppression is always a good thing,,no matter where it is. The constitution of USA is what I gauge things by,,and there are many in USA trying to subvert it,,,,Not cool.

And there are many in the U.S. who would oppress their own countrymen if they could get away with it. Some of them already are.

I will be very interested to see how the vote in Scotland turns out. One of my best friends, an Englishman, told me that the best thing to come out of Scotland was a road to England. Being of Scots ancestry, I had to poke him in the eye.

correct sir,,if one has the educational background of the history of how + why United States was born,,then they are very clear on "whom" are attempting to push us to socialism,,,,and they will be watched very closely by true Americans. My hats off to Scotland,,and there move to be free.

Save your speech. Not interested. Also, you spelled "their" wrong and "hat's" needs an apostrophe as it's a contraction.

Thanks, FZ Fan, for bringing the discussion back to what the OP was all about (which, just in case anyone missed it was NOT about the politics of the USA).

The Macallan is, indeed, a fine dram.

And 'One Man and His Dog' (the 'competition sheep-herding' programme) was, unbelievably, even more exciting than it sounds! ! !

If you are a Scot.......see Searcy's clip above......[lol]

EDIT : FWIW I'm (at this very moment) having a 14-y-o Clynelish instead of the Laphroaig....[smile]

Slainte Mhath, my friends!

For those of you who live in the UK do you think it will be Yea or Neah? And how would it affect the UK. On a side note I have read a lot of Irvine Welsh. It sometimes gets hard to understand. Filth was probably my favorite.

Its too close too call..

And no one knows exactly whats going to happen... That's part of the issue... I guess if they vote yes we will see what laws they decide to bring in....

A lot of the time I think people tend to be more resistant to change than not.. BUT theres something to be said for Scottish pride....

I live in America, not Amerikur, If you don't know how to spell the name of your own nation you have bigger issues then how another nation may vote.I assume this country has been good to you, show it some respect. msp_cursing.gif
