icarus73
Hello! This is my first post on the forum. I got my first Gibson in 2004 - a natural burst SG standard, new at the time. I recently picked up my 2nd Gibson, this time vintage on eBay. I knew what I wanted in that I knew I wanted block inlays, walnut finish, chrome hardware (not gold), and something older. When I saw this one, it had everything I wanted and so when the wife approved, I clicked purchase! If you can't tell by that statement, I had no knowledge of vintage guitars. Since purchasing, I've actually taken a few hours to educate myself on what I spent a bunch of money on. I read a lot about the Norlin era, volutes, and a lot of varying opinions on models from this era. I just wanted to link everything I know about the guitar here and see what your knowledgable minds think about this guitar. It seems like the price I got was fair, and I won't know how it plays until it shows up, so we'll see! I did purchase it in hopes that it plays great - I'm clearly not a "collector". Does anything in the photos worry you it could be a fake? Other thoughts? http://ebay.com/itm/390943982061 Also, appears it's a 70 or 71. Any way I can find out for sure which one? It will be hard to pin it down exactly. The serial numbers are a mess. Looks real. Smell the inside when you get it. Should smell like antique musky aroma. The logo's in 68-69-70 tend to degrade and yours is not. And it looks like a full size volute so I'm guessing 71 or even later. Why you didn't get the original case is a mystery. Did you ask why it was in an Epi case ? I believe your money is safe. Not all Norlin stuff is junk. And that guitar is light and should be a tone monster. You are hooked now I'll bet. You will be asking for a lot of approval in the future.

Early Norlin....even better! please tell us how it smells.... I had a 66 Epiphone Casino that was so clean the dealers at the Indy show in 1991 smelled the inside. That's where I learned the technique. You can't fake that smell. I have a 1946 D-18 and the harder you play it the more the smell comes out. I love the smell of vintage guitars in the morning.
