Craziest Gibson Ideas?

Wow, Gibson actually made this?????????

Everything was ready to go, including pre-release hype, as shown in this article - http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/Gibson_Unveils_Strat_Style_Jimi_Hendrix_Signature_Line .and here - http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/jimi-hendrix-electric-guitar-packages-220786/

But, as I recall, "something" caused the products to get pulled just before retail release. I can't remember if it was a conflict with the Hendrix family (Janie Hendrix, Jimi's sister and CEO of Authentic Hendrix who licensed Gibson for this) or what.

I always thought it was a conflict with the deafening roar of laughter it caused.

Or, as is more likely, there was no intention of ever doing it, just another Einsteinian idea to generate some kind of buzz about something. Maybe.

I almost forgot that revolting looking Moderne Zakk plays...I think I was that horrified I subconsciously erased it from my memory.

What about this moment of insanity from Gibson - The Eye [scared] I think there's a horror film called The Eye. Why was this guitar not in it? It would have been more frightening than the movie [biggrin]

I actually think the Eye is a pretty sweet looking guitar. I dig the nice, deep cutouts, 24 frets, the fact that the frets actually go to the edge of the fretboard (hurrah for no binding nibs), and it's got pickups I'd love to try out. The color is also excellent and the pickguard is pretty cool too, although I could do without the powder coated pickup covers. It's unique and bold without being overly gimmicky. And I've found a dealer that still has a new one in stock :)

Each to their own [smile] If you like it, go for it. They seem to have been offered in another 2 finishes at one point - a weird looking aqua blue and a pea green colour if you search them on the net...

I do like some of Gibson's rarer guitar designs, like the L6S, the 1959 EDS 1275 hollow and the EMS 1235.

Yeah, that was weird too. I always just look at that sorta thing and shrug my shoulders. Somebody wants one I guess. I'm content to watch them make whatever money they thought they would on it, and the inevitable quiet disappearance of it when they don't.

In my guess, you mentioned the reasons why even the "correct" Flying V and Explorer shapes didn't catch on when they were released first in 1958. Both shapes play great when standing, the Explorer when sitting, too, and practically no other guitars provide that degree of supporting the forearm of the striking hand. I love my Explorer most for the latter and for her jazzy clean sound.

Gibson did make an Explorer with 3 cream-colored P90s in it during the 80s, in a few finishes including camouflage. I liked the ebony finish one.

I liked this one which was for sale in London a while back. I Fancied having a go on it but it was sold before I had a chance to try it out;
