PB26 Posted November 1, 2014 Share Posted November 1, 2014 Trying to understand something and it just isn't happening. I have two identical guitars, both 2013 SG standards with identical hardware (bridge, tailpiece, etc.) I set them up so both have the same amount of neck relief. Both have the same action. The difference: the distance from the wood to the top of the action adjustment thumbwheel on one of them is 1cm. On the other, it's exactly 2mm lower. I also measured to the top of the low E saddle and the 2mm difference is there. The different thumbwheel heights are immediately noticeable, which is why I pulled out the ruler in the first place. One is set up in E standard and the other in C# standard, but I controlled for this by putting the C# guitar into E standard and with the same strings. Doesn't matter if I have 12s on it in C# or 9s in E standard, the thumbwheel/saddles are clearly lower than on the other guitar. The only possible variable I'm immediately aware of: on the C# guitar, the tailpiece came stock a little lower, and this is the guitar with the lower thumbwheel. But I'm not seeing how that can dictate a lower bridge. Any ideas why this is? They both play great, but when things that should be the same are different, I gotta ask why. Gibson usually specifies +/- 15' from nominal value, resulting in +/- 2.74 mm bridge height variation for 628.65 mm scale length at a given setup. There are no reliable informations on numbers of items, but 30 per colour can be considered as a sensible suggestion. They were GC Exclusives in the USA. Only very few made it to Europe, nine of them to UK, but none in Regal Purple among these. Mine has been the only one I found brand-new at a dealer in Germany. I guess if I were a collector and had had the money then, I would have tried buying one of them each. However, it would have been a problem to get a Royal Blue one in Europe. I think they should offer some more Les Paul guitars with stained top and natural coat all around. It's just stunning with a nice top figuring.
