duane v
Wow, I am impressed It takes about 6 hours.... And once it's done... it's done.... You'll need a razor blade to go back..... What I like most is its not uniformed like real aged binding is
ksdaddy
Thanks for that Duane. I'd like to try it sometime. In 2005 I sent my fathers '81 Martin M38 to Johnny Rushing for a neck reset and new abalone snowflake inlaid fingerboard. The new neck binding is laundry white and it bugs the urine out of me every time I see it compared to the slightly yellowed body binding.

Tenthmed
That looks fantastic, I like the 'aged' darker binding on any guitar but it particularly suits yours.
pippy
Stunning job, Duane! IMHO it looked fine as-was with the chrome and white but the "amber'd and gold" look takes the whole package to a different place. Top Quality Job Well Done. Very impressive all round. stein
This is a good trick...I didn't have a clue about it myself. I think it belongs in the DIY or fix-it thread or whatever it is now. Lots of folks could use this. As for the guitar, there really is nothing like fresh (or good) gold hardware on a Gibby "custom" with yellowed binding. THAT'S the look that I think is the best when it comes to gold hardware on a Gibby.
duane v
I should probably hit the Epi guys..... That constituency performs tons of upgrades, though they probably know the trick anyhow I ordered these aged amber knobs.... The non-aged just werent quite dark enough to blend well... but I'll be using new historic gold pointers.... I thinks these will fit better.... One thing about gold after a a couple 3-4 hour gigs and all my sweat, the gold will look like crap in no time
stein
, though they probably know the trick anyhow I've heard (read) a lot of aging tricks, and I've done a few. Never to that level of success. To me, it looks like you got a real good amount of yellow there, and at the same time, blended it well with the rest of the guitar. It is a lot of added yellow without looking out of place. "Out of place"...that's the key. That's usually the hard part. You seemed to breeze right through it. duane v
Just finished the split diamond and Gibson logo.... That was a challenge to get those to match the binding.... Patience required on this part of it.... The fret markers were easy... Usually those only yellow a little... I used my 76 and 80 LPC's as a reference... I took pix in all different lighting so it will give an idea how it looks

buffalob
Wow man this looks killer. Way more subtle and believable than the method I used on the casino overhaul. Thanks for sharing this one sir. I may be doing some additional "aging" to the casino in the near future when I add the planned bigsby...hmm gears turning now... duane v
Well she is almost done.... Still waiting for my aged amber top hats and the vintage Gibby posi-lok strap buttons to be plated gold.... Got her set-up last week and she was put to test at a recent gig... played her for two hours straight and she held up well.... Really a great AXE for the price

duane v
Well it's finally done... It took some time to get some parts from Poland like the aged knobs, trc and posi-lok strap buttons... but she is complete
brundaddy
Those fret markers kinda stand out - why not just actually buy an old guitar?
duane v
Those fret markers kinda stand out - why not just actually buy an old guitar? Good question...lol.... I really wanted a MidTown Custom when they first came out, but I was a little turned away about the 3 piece top. Then they were re-issued with the 2 piece top and I couldn't resist for $1400.... I talked to a few players on MLP and they had told me the guitar felt like a LPC and the reach of an SG.... So I went for it.... And since there are no vintage versions of this model, new was really the only option When I opened the box all that chrome and the white binding screamed Montgomery Wards...lol... So the first thing was to lose the chrome hardware and went with gold... Any other finish I could have lived with the bleach white binding, but the tobacco burst was begging for a little warmth so I ambered it.... On my vintage Gibby's the fret markers don't yellow that much.... very little so I just barely touched those... I guess if Gibson lacquered the finger boards with Nitro than you would see ambered fret markers Certainly this is not for everyone, and it really does nothing for the tone and it doesn't make me a better player ....lol... But I got what I wanted out of it.... I can say with 110% conviction that nobody has a MidTown Custom like mine...lol... whether that's a good thing, I'll leave it up to those that look at this thread
Drog
Duane, that turned out fantastic. I will also echo how nice this guitar is, at an affordable price. I love mine. Very cool tips here, thanks
