USA hard case combo lock latch screw size.

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 or so USA hard case with a combo lock that is missing the latch part that ataches to the lid. I plan to buy a new latch but no one sells the screws with the latch. I can probably find a couple screws that will work at lows or Home Depot but I do not know what size they are. Does anyone know?

Thanks

It's not a screw. The latches and hinges are applied with what are called "split rivets". This is a special rivet that takes special tools, NOT available at your local hardware store.

If you want to try to do this yourself, what you want for this repair are "blind rivets". These parts and installation tools ARE available at your local hardware store.

Otherwise, take the case and the repair parts to your local shoe repair shop and have them do it!

Thanks for the reply but the combo latch on this case had two screws. The combo bottom part and the rest of the latches have the split rivits. The screws are gold and have a round head and a square hole in the middle. Here is an auction for one in the UK but I don't want to pay $19+ a piece for them.

That picture shows just a pan head screw with sheet metal threads and a square socket recess. You probably won't find it at the local hardware store with that head, thread, and material combination. As Rod says, check the diameter of the holes in the latch and the case to figure out the screw size. There are plenty of screw gauge tables online to help you sort it out.

The rim of most quality cases is about 1/4" plywood, to which you must add the thickness of the latch to figure out the maximum screw length.

There are plenty of specialist online retailers of unusual fasteners, but you might just google "guitar case and luggage hardware parts", or something like that.

I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over getting exactly the right fastener for this.
