Bodaggit
So, I posted about my new 2008 Classic. First Gibson LP. Looks cool, sounds awesome and aggressive, but the more I play it.... Significantly lighter than my 1992 Epiphone standard (7.4 lbs). It feels like it's headstock heavy when playing it standing up. *It doesn't do this of course*, but it *feels* like when it's just hanging on me the guitar will tip headstock first. Does that make sense? Feels really funny to me. Anyone else experience this? If so, did you get used to it? Its different than the "anchored" feeling the body of my epi gives me. Weird. It actually makes me consider selling it. Is that totally crazy?!
LPguitarman
How does it play and sound? I wouldn't sell it simply for a Heavy Headstock issue. It may be due to chambering weight relief, or lighter body wood. Shouldn't be any issue with the sound or playability. And, it should have better electronics than your Epiphone. brdeveloper
Is that totally crazy?! Not really. I think it's a bit annoying having a "heavy" neck. It feels like I had to apply more force to play. I had a Epi SG G400 which had this issue. Also, I think I really don't like the "aggressive" output from 490R/498T. It sounds too early-2000s with that cr**py bands with Eddie Vedder-like vocals (not bashing Pearl Jam here, of course, but the counterfeit ones). My 2014 Studio doesn't suffer from heavy neck (maybe because it's made with maple?), but it has 490R/498T pickups. Fortunately, it has the coil tapping feature, so I play it mostly tapped, then it sounds more bright and fat instead of that insane mids from the non-tapped mode. MichaelDH
I have an Epi Nighthawk Reissue, and it is neck heavy. Standing to play it, it will nose dive on me. The body is thinner than an LP and pretty light, really takes some time to get used to it. Don't think I'd sell it due to this, though.
charlie brown
My 2000 "Classic" is probably "medium" weight. Not heavy, not really light, "just right!" It doesn't have "neck dive" at all. But, a good strap would counter that, make it a non-issue, really. Still, if it's not "doing it," for you...there are always other's out there that might/will! Good Luck! Bodaggit
The 2008 Classic was not chambered to my knowledge. Im not an expert but a pretty big fan of the Les Paul Classic model. I still could be wrong but it was only the Les Paul Standard that year. I had a 2010 silver burst studio deluxe with ebony board and chambered body I just couldnt warm up to because of that weird weight. Sometimes mahogany can just have different weights depending how dry or old it is. My second Signature T is very light and I love it as I have to wear it under hot lights for about an hour and a half. It has never fatigued me and Im extremely grateful. May I see pictures? Sure! http://imgur.com/a/dpK33 I called Gibson, and it ends up the 2008 Classics were chambered. Again, I like the sound and it's a super sharp looking guitar. I'm definitely going to give it some more time. It's just so ...different.
Bodaggit
That's REALLY nice!!! I don't have the means to have several guitars, so what I have I want to really love. This neck heavy thing has been bugging me so bad for a while. So, I went down to the local GC to try out some LPs tonight to see if I was crazy. I picked up a Les Paul STUDIO 2014....irony....LOVED IT. Man, I've never had a guitar call to me like that. It was weird. The classic is on craigslist now. :) Its all about how it feels in your hands, right?
Bodaggit
Yes I know how you felt. That studio looked so cool on the wall and when I set down to play it at Guitar Center it was gnarley, but when I stood up I always had that same feeling you did. Here was the last show I played it at. It was 2012 MAN YOU JUST MADE MY F'N DAY! :) Of course the thought in my head was "Yeah, you love the studio, but who actually plays one?!" There you are. Thanks man. F'n killer pics!!!
Guest Farnsbarns
Try attaching a lb of lead weights to the strap at the end that attaches to the rear most button. That should address the balance problem.

RobertAndersson
Sure thing :) when I get home I can post a you tube video of the last Nugent tribute show we did. I turned 50 this year so things are just naturally slowing down a bit and changing up. I have always wanted to play covers and I'm finally getting to. It's so much fun I like Classic Rock late 60s 70s early 80s. The Beatles Hendrix Zeppelin Sabbath Kiss Deep Purple you know the real deal. We are adding 3 more hours of covers and originals to the nugent set. I'm having so much fun again. :) Donny, I'm really looking forward to seeing that video! Really great to hear that you enjoy your playing! //Robert
stein
The guitar doesn't make you look cool you make it look cool. You have a knack for saying the right things just the right way. You're cool like that.
stein
I think this whole thread should be a lesson. If you are going to play a guitar standing and strapped on, one should evaluate how a guitar feels standing and strapped on. It does make a difference. Guitars have "feel" that way. RobertAndersson
Here you go this was Dec 05 2014 and its a far cry from what I used to do but it is A LOT more fun to say the least. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCoCbGRh684 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e60evfBlIqY We are playing again this month :) Donny, That was really fun watching, I can understand that you're having a great time playing, sounds awsome. And you sing great too! Thanks! //Robert
Bodaggit
I know this thread has taken a turn, but I thought I'd update: Now thinking of keeping it. :) There is a sense of "taming the beast" that I kind of like. (although I could change my mind tonight lol...I have it listed on craigslist for 1350). I think maybe I hate the pickups. The sound isn't right. At the risk of sounding incredibly gimmicky and cliche, has anyone tried the Slash signature pickups? I'm interested in putting maybe 57 classic/57 plus in, but those seymore duncans have an excellent price point if they sound as good as the reviewers say. I've got the 496/500 setup in the classic now, and there just doesn't seem to have much depth or room to play with the tone. Does that make sense?
