flyingfrets
The Wombles was a stop-motion animated childrens' show that ran in the UK in the mid-70s. Producer Mike Batt was asked to do some music for the program. The music apparently spawned 7 top 10 singles in the UK & Europe, so a "live action" band (consisting of the studio musicians in costume) began touring. Surprisingly, in addition to Mike Batt doing the vocals, the group included Chris Spedding on guitar (Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, Jack Bruce, Brian Eno, etc.) and Ray Cooper on drums & percussion (Elton John, Billy Joel, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, etc.), along with a number of lesser known (but often heard) studio musicians. Though the act was never intended as anything more than a novelty, The Wombles are apparently remembered fondly by folks of a certain age, as their appearance at the 2011 Glastonbury Festival will attest to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukrZyzLeISc
