Hello and welcome to the Forums!

From 1977-on the eight-digit serial number (nine-digit since 2005) has the built date and production number encoded into itself, according to this form: YDDDY("B")PPP.

YY - the first and the fifth digit tell the built year. Yours is a 2012 model.

DDD - the day of the year. (181st day is 30th June in 2012).

PPP - production number: 172.

(B - since 2005) - batch: 0. (the first during the day).

I always thought it was YDDDY(B)PPP until 2013, with the B introduced in July, 2004 I think. BPPP may go up to 0699 and then switch to 1001 as far as I know.

2014 models start with 14 even when made in late 2013, and correspondingly 2015 models. Both don't allow for decoding date or batch as far as I know.

To be honest, I am not sure about the batch and production numbers. Simply, because I never cared about them.

But You are right. I checked it:

But, Nashville production numbers will start on "3" (the seventh digit), thus production numbers:

YDDDY0372 - will be the guitar with production number "72", Nashville plant.

YDDDY0472 - is the 172nd produced during the day in the Nashville plant.

YDDDY0272 - will be the 272nd made in the Bozeman plant!

Hello!

A bit more on batch/production numbers:

"NOTE - Gibson USA goes to a 9 digit serial number in early July 2005.

The sixth number is now a batch number- batch 0 starts at the beginning of the day, and once we stamp 699, the batch number will change to 1. The first 5 numbers remain the same, the last 3 numbers will remain the same. The only difference is the addition of this batch indicator."

(Source: http://www2.gibson.com/Support/Serial-Number-Search.aspx)

...and:

"When acoustic production began at the plant built in Bozeman, Montana (in 1989), the series' numbers were reorganized. Bozeman instruments began using 001-299 designations and, in 1990, Nashville instruments began using 300-999* designations." (see also post #4).

*Probably a typo, it supposed to be "300-699".

How are the Bozeman and Memphis models affected by the 2014 and 2015 changes in serialization?

AFAIK, Bozeman and Memphis are still using the same format. But Nashville looks to be continuing with their 2014 format: 2 digit year and 7 digit rolling count: YYPPPPPPP
