Ebagjones
Hello! Recently bought a NOS 2014 SG Standard off eBay and after paying for it noticed some discrepancies that made me a little concerned that I was just buying an elaborate fake. First off the TRC says "Standard" instead of "SG", the pickguard above the neck pickup says "SG Custom" and it does not have Min-E-Tune. I'm no expert so I've included pics from the listing in hopes someone can ease my mind.
Ebagjones
My understanding is all 2014 SG Standards had Min-E-Tune.
capmaster
Hello Ebagjones, and welcome here. To me it looks like a modded Gibson SG Standard 2014. Min-ETune was removed as well as the truss rod cover saying ETune, Deluxe machine heads and a "Standard" Les Paul TRC were retrofitted. The engraved SG CUSTOM was presumably done to express the personalization. Hope this helps.
Pesh
Is it second hand? The TRC shows "Standard", and the one by the pick guard shows "SG Custom"; did the original owner mention any modifications?
Ebagjones
I appreciate the feedback - outside of my addiction to Gibson SG Basses I've played almost exclusively Fenders, so I'm a little inexperienced with Gibson guitars and also inexperienced with buying instruments on eBay. The owner says he bought it from a local store and wasn't aware they had made any modifications to the instrument. It wasn't until I started looking at other pictures online I started to notice discrepancies. I have to admit if it's not the real deal it's very convincing. Ebagjones
Well now that I think of it I've seen a lot of 14 SG Standards say "ETune" on the TRC so that would make sense that they would change that once they took the Min-E-Tune out. capmaster
The engraved Gibson TRCs of mine saying S-G, SG, L6-S, L6S, Standard or Traditional are on the shelf and replaced with blank ones. Different strokes for different folks
