Built For Speed

Hey fellas. This is an old Stray Cats tune (Brian Setzer).

I tried this at first in one take, but I cant get the harmonica to have depth when I play it from the medieval torture neck brace. So this is a separate harp track. Any suggestions on how to get good harp going while playing a rhythmic guitar part? I would like to do this song in public... in a local bar.

I used to practice while driving - songs became very automatic - like keeping your alternating thumb going - but I played almost exclusively Neil Yound stuff, so the drivong rythm was never really preent. Does your rack move on you? That was always my biggest issue, until I figured out that I could disassemble it and reassemble with the front flipped over. Remember, as a harmonica player, we either blow, or suck.

Lol like I told my wife the "harmonica" is easy, you just suck and blow and move your face back and forth! She never got the hang of it unfortunately.

Nice job Sal! I would have run out of steam on that one.

So far so good, but adapting a Dylan/Neil harmonica style to a blues song is a tough task. The harp holders can handle some occasional bends as Neil Young does, but if you don't have a good "torture device", you can push that harp right out of there. Guess you've found that, as you'd gone to a separate harp track. And if you're going that route for recording, or just to have fun blowing the harp with the boys when you're taking a guitar break, the gold standard of blues mics would have to be the Green Bullet; that might help you get your mojo working:

Like the strumming.Has an Elvis Mystery Train feel.

I think the harmonica is just a bit a practice / repetition to get it coordinated while you play the guitar at the same time. But 62 is right, you can be more expressive sans holder.

I've had the same holder for 20 years and knowing me back then It would have been the cheapest I could get.It is often droopy ( sad I know). I have mastered the art of a quick holder push back mid song to get it back in the mouth reach zone.
