Dave F
Depends on what the custom features are. Most of the recent customs are rosewood and have a totally different sound. Need a little more detail to give you some better answers.
slimt
There are more than one style of J45 Customs.. which one would you choose for a topic? Walnut, Maple? Rosewood, Koa?
E-minor7
You need to know how much various types of wood mean for the sound. I'd say read a little (not too much) and then go out a try the beasts : Mahogany - rosewood - maple as the basics, , , then move on to koa etc. . Regarding 45's you'll find excellent rosewood Customs, but the classic workhorse as it's called is and will continue to have hog back'n'sides. That said, you'll find variation in the hogs too. My Standard fx, always was a very lyrical guitar and has only grown closer to being hard worker after the compression somewhat evaporated. No matter what you got a thrilling ride ahead. Stay curious yet focused. .
GuitarLight
The difference as stated above, is in the WOOD type. Rosewood usually cost more than Mahogany, and the two woods give it a different tone and sound to the experienced ear. You should know before buying one, that the Mahogany J45 Standard sells more because it is cheaper in cost, and many people prefer the sound of Mahogany over Rosewood in this model. But for those who do prefer the sound of Rosewood....the Rosewood custom J-45 model is available at a higher cost. Play them both. Play them all. Then decide which you favor before buying.
