Which Epiphone to Buy?

They certainly do play nicely. I am impressed with the fit and finish-- the f holes are bound, among other things. The neck is a bit chunkier, but I am comfortable with a larger neck. Do you have one Kidblast? Thank you!

I had one (antique burst), and I loved it. it was a nice one too. At one point needed some quick cash and it was not getting a lot of play time, so I decided to sell it. I soon came to regret it. Someday, I will be looking to replace it.

KidBlast, I have kept my options open to consider an Emperor-- I don't know if that is in my $500 range, but I like the looks. I have not played. Is it completely hollow or is there a post under the bridge? I don't feedback is an issue for me because I play clean or a bit of OD for blues sound. Otherwise, the Sheraton II is a great option.

I hear you about the fuller size bodies but would like to say that my ES339 Pro is a blues and vintage rock beauty. The tone is as authentic bluesy semi-hollow as it gets. Great guitar, and it's a very comfortable fit for my build. Check one out if you get the chance.

Good playing on whichever choice you make, hollowdan! [biggrin]

Hi Dan, I assume by Emperors you refer to Emperor II? (aka, the Joe Pass model?) These are completely hollow and the bridge is not pinned, it will move but it wont be a problem unless you're a very heavy handed player and chose to use light gauge strings.

I had a Joe Pass too, I was able to work the feedback, but I had to watch out for it.

Price wise, about the same as the Sheri, for example:

Sweetwater: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/search.php?s=Joe+PAss&Go=Search

Musicans Friend: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/epiphone-joe-pass-emperor-ii-electric-guitar

Between these two online dealers, you may find musicians friend will deal with you a bit on price. Cases are not included for either the sheri or the Emperor (about $100 if you go with an epi case, you can get an after market case for less)

used ones w/case in the $350/450 ball park for both.

Regarding feedback control, you might be ok in your setting if you'll use it for your praise band work, depends really on how loud it gets. The Sheri will be quite a bit more resistant to feedback than will the Emperor II it will also have a different tone completely.

Hi Steve, I am appreciative of your advice. I only played an ES 339 pro one time at Sam Ash. It did not give away a whole lot on the fullness and tone of the 335. I think the key is about the fit and I certainly appreciate that point. I will attempt to play one again, if possible. What finish do you have on yours, Steve? Dan

Kidblast, I sure appreciate all of this information! I went to M.F and found a blem Joe Pass for $479. That gives me something to think about. I just played a really clean one with great flame on the back for $499 at Guitar center. I compared it to an Ibanez 75 and the alnico's beat the ceramics on the Ibanez hands down. The Dot they had for $419 was a very close second to the Pass. I think I like the acoustic nature of the JPass but the Dot has a more versatile pallet, including rock uses. I find the J Pass has so much potential for use in the traditional blues and clean electric sound I enjoy. Thanks again! Dan

I have the Vintage Sunburst Dan, very traditional for this style of guitar. The transparent Cherry is also gorgeous and if I got the ES339 P90 Pro that's what I'd get. I have owned a Gibson ES335 & ES330 and although one has to tweak the EQ settings with the 339, (I'm usually setup for my Strats first) it does have a very characteristic old-time vintage 'bucker-hollowbody jazzy bluesy tone that I much appreciate. In fact, I specifically chose it for precisely that sound! I just found that the larger size bodies were just not as comfortable, but LOVED the tone though.

I'm sure that you'll make the right choice for yourself, I'm just overall very pleased with the quality and playability of my new Epiphone, the first "budget" semi-hollow guitar I've purchased in decades. [thumbup]

Edited to add, gigged it last Sat. tuning was stable and because of the center-block construction, had zero feedback issues!

Hello, I have a Casino Coupe in the Natural finish, $450 street price. If your budget is really 500 and you want a brand new, "A" stock guitar in your choice of three lovely finishes, that's the way to go. I really like mine more and more as time goes on (have had it for 6 months). The P90s really shine when using the right amp settings, and it sounds wonderful unplugged. Anyway if you have a hard $500 limit, it's that or look for something used instead. You can get a new ES-339 for the same price, so the choice is really between hollow or semi-hollow. Ken

Hmm... Well, Epiphone is incredible for the money and they do give one choices for the price I can afford. I buy what I can with cash, just because that works for me. I recently sold a mandolin to buy this guitar, so I want to get "just that one." I am intregued by the 339 shape, pro or Casino. As Steve said, the larger body has a tone that is hard to beat. I loved the Joe Pass, too. Killer fit and finish. I am investigating the ES 339 and coupe right now to compare. THANK YOU KEN and STEVE.

Sounds like you've got things narrowed down a bit. If you change your mind about the Ibanez Artcore, I saw a pristine used one of these http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/ibanez-artcore-agr73t-hollowbody-electric-guitar#productDetail for sale locally with a hardshell case. I'd be willing to grab it and ship it off to a fellow forum member (or I may just buy it for myself). [thumbup]

StRanger7032-- That is one fine looking guitar! Holy Cow! Thanks for the offer. Curious if it has the ceramics or the Alnico's. I really prefer the latter.

Not sure about the pickups. They are mini humbuckers, ACH4-M and ACH3-M. I couldn't find the specs on them. The seller is asking $475, which includes a $100 hardshell case. The guitar without the case is $599 new, so it would be a pretty good deal, especially if it could be negotiated to $425 or even $450. I'm going to resist the urge to buy it for myself since I'm moving soon and don't need to acquire any more guitars at the moment!

That is a cool deal! I have my heart set on an Epiphone -- though I haven't decided yet-- I am enjoying the research. Hope the move goes well.:)

Epiphone is a great choice (I have 3). I'd vote for the ES-339, assuming the Epiphone version is a good representation of the Gibson model which I own. The Sheraton II is great too if you want a larger body. I'd personally look for an older Korean one if you go that route. Just my opinion, but I played a newer one and it just didn't feel (or look) close to the quality of the Korean one I owned in the early 90's.

The Sheraton is arguably Epiphone's flagship. The gold plating may be only 1 atom thick but the rest should be top notch. If Epiphone were ever to ship a bad Sheraton, it would be a sad situation. I have four, and would not think of parting with any of them.

Glad to hear it, Jeffery. I hope I can swing one of the nicer Epiphone guitars, and a Sheraton would be a great choice (used, of course, due to the price). Dan

I've noodled a bit with a 339 Pro at our local shop down the road. Aside from needing a setup, it's impressive. they have it tagged at $439. but I would guess $400 would be reasonable for a cash - out the door - situation.

If I was in the market, I'd probably be trying to finagle a deal. Like I need a another guitar? LOL!

I got an email from GuitarGuitar yesterday evening about a massive shipment of Epiphone guitars they had in. Naturally they threw out some deals and teasers to get some crowds onto the site. 4 hours passed with me perusing their site, and the hankering for a Riviera P93 has surfaced once again!

Damn...

Shhhh..... Musician's Friend has a Swingster Royale for $479. G.C. has the same price. I have it in the cart. The look isn't exactly my favorite. I like the J Pass and I love those Sheratons. Swingster a great deal at that price?

Trust me Dan, you wont be sorry, these are killer guitars. I love mine. (I paid 560 and I thought THAT was a killer deal)

check the price of these @ Sweetwater

you tell me if this isn't great deal??

I know! Right? This at $479 is unreal... I like the look of Casino, Dot, Joe Pass better, but I can take the white gold bling thing, with the value -- playability and sound? Are the pickups better and can I play blues with it?

Well, I finally decided which guitar was most suitable for me, and it came down to the Sheraton II. I could only buy one and I needed to prioritize the look and feel, but also they ability to play electric blues along with functions in the church band. Well, this natural Sheraton with the OHSC was barely used for $500 shipped to my door. The hardware has no tarnish and the body and headstock no apparent marks or scratches. I will probably need to do my own action and intonation adjustments. Thanks for all the help deciding. I tend to take a long time researching and determining the best course. You guys really helped educate me! Thanks! DanSheraton_zpsalgyxe54.jpg
