ES-335 Studio or not?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am looking at the new ES-335's and I like what I'm reading but being a new OLD player I don't quite understand the difference in stuido and regular. I know the stuido does not come with a pick guard but I've been lead to believe a pick guard can be added. I'm sure there are other differences, I just don't know what they are. Thank you in advance for your coments. Nick

Hi Mr Nick....

The 'Studio' category has been given to several guitars...and generally refers to an entry level version of guitars such as Les Paul or ES 335

A comparison of the specs will reveal differences such as vol/tone controls and 'quality' of cosmetic features like binding

The big one, as ever, is the selling price....

Take care though....'You only get what you pay for'..... <_<

Hi Nick and welcome aboard! 2015 is a great year to be in the market for a new Gibson 335. I just bought one and it truly "sings", I could not be happier. Of couse the pricier version has some upgrades but in the words of Mike Voltz, Gibson Product Specialist, the Studio is "every bit a 335 just as the rest of them" (watch here) ...

Before we discuss what the Studio doesn't have let's talk about what it does. For 2015 there have been numerous improvements in the Gibson Memphis 335 line up that have trickled down into the Studio as well. Namely, reinforced neck, beefier Historic truss rod, lower profile frets, locking tailpiece, Grover tuners, rolled fingerboard edges and new for the Studio this year ... binding. For the money the Studio is a lot of guitar by any measure. The biggest difference are the controls. In the pricier version (that I have) you can control each PU with it's own volume and tone pots. As a player only you can decide if that is truly important (to me it was). There are other differences of course ...

the PU's are Burstbucker 1&2's (57's on the Studio which have a creamier fatter sound that many players prefer BTW and came standard on the pricier version last year) You also get Tuner upgrade, bone nut, nicer fretboard, block inlays and a few other goodies that may or may not be important to you. Here's two links to Gibson's website so you can compare the two side by side. Personally I don't think you'll be disappointed in the Studio one single bit. I bought mine from Sweetwater and it arrived perfectly set-up with zero fit and finish issues. Good luck with your decision and please let us all know what you wind up getting and how you like it. MIke
