12 string Guitars and Mandolins.

This might seem a silly question but can you make a 12 string guitar but mandolin size. You can get a mandoguitar but that is like a 12 string guitar capoed at the 12th fret. What I mean is using the bottom part of the neck and attaching it to the body so as to give a mandolin length. Is this musically possible? Your thoughts guys!

I'm thinking more on a structural plane. Would a smaller body be able to handle the tension of 12 strings? [confused] I guess in the end, anything is possible if you throw enough money at it. [flapper]

Purely personal opinion....

It would be awful.... [biggrin]

The mandolin as an 8-er is a wonderful thing... [thumbup]

Body size, neck width, string spacing etc are optimum... <_<

Octave lower strings would IMO not be viable... [unsure]

But an interesting conjecture... #-o

Not a 12-string but....... [biggrin]

In South America there is an instrument called a tiple which can have 8 or 12 strings and is like a small guitar (I think)......
