fretplay
This might seem a silly question but can you make a 12 string guitar but mandolin size. You can get a mandoguitar but that is like a 12 string guitar capoed at the 12th fret. What I mean is using the bottom part of the neck and attaching it to the body so as to give a mandolin length. Is this musically possible? Your thoughts guys!
surfpup
I think, due to the short scale length, that what you describe would have to be pitched high - like the mando guitar.
Riffster
Yea, it'd just be a louder made guitar.
Dennis G
I'm thinking more on a structural plane. Would a smaller body be able to handle the tension of 12 strings? I guess in the end, anything is possible if you throw enough money at it.
Versatile
Purely personal opinion.... It would be awful.... The mandolin as an 8-er is a wonderful thing... Body size, neck width, string spacing etc are optimum... <_< Octave lower strings would IMO not be viable... But an interesting conjecture... jdgm
The Manzer Medusa: Not a 12-string but....... In South America there is an instrument called a tiple which can have 8 or 12 strings and is like a small guitar (I think)......
fromnabulax
I don't know about 12 strings, but this Peruvian charango has 10 and sounds mighty interesting. Kind of an interesting aroma too. -phew-
