I recommend buying a cheap set of digital calipers and measuring the tuners you have and see if the measurements match the specs on Stew Macs site. I play this guitar at church on Sundays so I'll have to wait now to take a tuner off and measure it. I was trying to think of what you use to do these measurements. Calipers, that's it. hollowdan Posted May 22, 2015 Share Posted May 22, 2015 Before you buy tuners, I would suggest you try a few tweaks that work well. I am a player not a guitar repair expert, but I tried these suggestions a professional suggested to me. The nut slots can be lubricated with a small amount of Vaseline or graphite, which keeps your strings from hanging up. Also work on the intonation of each bridge which will enhance tuning accuracy tremendously. A third fix is to have the nut slots gently filed a bit so that the string slots aren't so tight. I used an acoustic "G" string as a file on the nut on my Riviera and these three actions took care of the problem making the stock tuners effective. I find the Epiphone stock tuners to be fine. What brand of tuners are on your guitar and what is the issue that requires their replacement? I have an Epi ES339 Pro that has the factory stock Grover Deluxe tuners. Even though the 14:1 ratio takes a little getting used to, they do work very well. No slippage and the guitar stays in tune even with my frequent string bending. And BTW welcome to the forum, Ryder. Then, the G string did it. Hi Ryder, It sounds like you've done a lot of really great modifications already. That is tough when you are playing in church and you can't depend on your guitar's tuning. The tuners don't appear to have hex-bushings on top so if you go with replacements you may have to enlarge the peg holes. Frankly I'm surprised that the Casino Coupe would be sold with tuners of less than proper functionality, Ryder. My remaining question, is it possible at all that string slippage is the culprit rather than tuners? I wrap and tie my strings so any possibility of slippage once residual stretching is complete, is eliminated. Barring slipping (or more correctly, unwrapping) at the ball end, or problems with the nut or saddles, when this process is followed, and there is STILL slipping, all doubt is removed and tuner replacement is now the obvious step. If your bushings are press fit, they can be pushed out carefully using a small socket or rod of appropriate size, from the rear. The trick is not to damage the wood on the face. Slowly, a bit at a time on the first one, then once you have a feel for it, the rest should be no problem. The word is CAREFULLY. You may not even have to do this as there is an even chance that the Grovers will just drop in. I think that is what Epiphone used, until recently changing their specs on the site. The specs for my 339 have been recently changed to the same as your Casino Coupe. Mine's a 2014 so it has the "Grover Deluxe" not the plain "Deluxe" that are now stock. Even Gibson uses the very same Grover tuners just relabeled "Gibson Deluxe" on some of their guitars!!! Kind of a PITA considering how good the Grovers as originally supplied are! I've changed the strings several times since getting this guitar (which I absolutely love). As with any vintage style (short post) tuner it does take a bit of skill and patience to do just right. Used the existing ferrules. One thing, they are for sure vintage styled with the slot and hole in the middle. Tuners installed, restrung carefully, strings stretched, I'll see how it goes this week. The Grovers work properly and IMO, should not have been changed to the plain "Deluxe". Now you can begin to really play and enjoy your Coupe without the distraction of poorly performing tuners.
