How would you press in a high fret?

My Firebird 70s tribute developed a bit of a buzz on the G and B strings.

My first thought was to replace the nut but on closer inspection the nut looks fine, I grabbed a magnifying glass and sure enough the first fret is lifting up.

How should I tap it in place with tools usually found at home? Rubber mallet? Do I need to use glue before pressing it in?

I've never had to do this but I concur with your first thought of tapping it in without glue using something softer than the nickle fret. Use some support under the neck if you do though.

Rubber or Copper/Hide mallet, or use a 'dolly' between the hammer & fret made of a softer material. You might also try clamping it down with Molegrips or an adjustable spanner (monkey-wrench?) with protection between the jaws of course.

There are luthiers here. Hopefully one of them will look in. Good luck

Hello Riffster!

This seems to be a good method to me: http://www.guitarrepairbench.com/electric-guitar-repairs/loose_fret_ends.html

Please note, not all types of hammers are recommended for this kind of job. This is the one:

Best wishes... Bence
