MarlleyB
My Les Paul came with a gold cover for the pickup selector. some sort of anniversary design. looks cool but I'm sure the metal cover takes away from the sustain a bit. but it sustains fine and sounds great like it is. The guitar came with an extra cover that's plastic. should i change the metal cover with the plastic one? or will it not make much of a difference. kidblast
Are you talking about the cover on the back of the body that gives u access to the toggle switch?
deeman
your tone will not change regardless of what pick up switch cover you use.

HEADKNOCKER
The rear cover will not change in any way the way guitar sounds.. Purely aesthetics.. In my stash I have a early 90s era Brown switch plate cover that I figure is now rare as gibson stopped making them in that color.. I bought it to get the screws that came with it back 20+ years ago.. Some day I'll find a Gibby that needs it.. My Current Les Paul doesn't have one.. 1994 Gibson Les Paul Studio Lite w M-III Electronics
MarlleyB
It sound like that is what he is talking about. I think he need a True Historic Plastic Cover. That way you will get real 50's tone. Yes it's the cover that covers the toggle switch.
Guest Farnsbarns
You'll get more tone if you take it off Completely.
pippy
Ah! An Acolyte of the Eric Johnson Theism, eh, Farns?; "Actually the backplates are removed from all my guitars because I think they sound better with them off..." Drog
EC plays a Fender, Gibsons need covers so the tone does not leak out. In fact if you add more covers the tone increases. Van Halen knows this, that is why he added reflectors on his guitar. http://www.vintagekramer.com/catalog/edfrank2.jpg
pippy
I think you are 101% correct, Drog. The curved surfaces act as four extra tone-focussing devices - especially in the case of those very high-pitch frequencies which would otherwise be lost as they go to ground when p'up covers are removed due to stray capacitance leakage. I read it on the 'net. Pip.
HEADKNOCKER
You are correct!! Cover the inside with copper foil to help keep the creamy tone from leaking out there.. That's why my guitar is sealed up there.. Too Much tone with those ceramic humbuckers..

HEADKNOCKER
Could it be that it's easier to get the strings in & to adjust the claw with it off?? Hmmmm?? Could Be!!

btoth76
I wouldn't even open it up! Who knows what's under the cover. It's not wise to mess with it. It's like the ark of the covenant. Cheers... Bence

Cheers... Bence That's just silly. Gibson will only put covers & panels over the bits we're allowed to look at. Ed Roman famously axed through a Les Paul. That set off the intrusion transmitter and Gibson knew instantly.

SteveFord
Don't forget Syd Barrett glued mirrors onto his guitar to keep the tone from being sucked out by evil forces - they bounced right off and reflected back to where they came from.
