Mr. C.O. Jones
Yesterday while practicing I noticed all of a sudden that my bridge PU startet to drop in volume. First I thought it was my guitar cable, switched to the neck and that one worked normally. Next thing was opening the control cavity and all the solder joints looked good. Then I plugged in a patch cable and grabbed my multimeter. BINGO!!! Mesured the neck PU resistance, 7,8 seems to be ok. Then the bridge, Sometimes it stays at 7,7 then all of a sudden it drops rapidly to 4, without touching the guitar. When I push the PU a bit it goes up to 7,7 again while hearing a bit of cracking noise in the signal. When it stayed at 7,7 for a while and touching the PU didn,t change it. Good moment for testing the pots. And they seemed to work fine. Selectror swich looks ok too. But that didn,t last long, and the volume droped again. So my guess is that since touching the PU causes that reaction, it has to be some loose wire in the pickup. And that it stops exactly at half of the measured resistance makes me think that only one coil is working. Is that possible or total BS? Just wanted to get some opinions on that matter from you guys, before contacting customer care. Is there maybe a way to fix it myself? Thanks in advance. btoth76
Hello Marcos! Sounds like one of the coils is shorted out. If You haven't done such a delicate work before, I'd suggest to take it to a specialist. Good luck... Bence
Mr. C.O. Jones
Hi Bence, to my surprise I just found out that we have a Gibson warranty service center near Valencia. They seem to do a very nice job judging from the photos. I think it would be wise to bring it to the pros and let them do their magic. They bulid really good looking guitars too, and the repairs look awesome. http://www.afjguitars.com/indexIN.html
surfpup
If you are handy, you can resolder all the connections with fresh solder. I've had similar circumstances and fresh, tight solder joints solved the problem.
