old guy Posted September 10, 2015 Share Posted September 10, 2015 oh yeah, that is fake, look at the headstock, way too tall and thin. the serial was stamped after the guitar was finished. looks almost like someone tried to cut an epiphone headstock to look like a Gibson. But, the serial number...it should have a 6-digit serial number for that era! This is strange, but still the guitar looks 100% genuine Gibson from the much-loved Norlin-era. Cheers... old guy Posted September 11, 2015 Share Posted September 11, 2015 i think that is an 05, by the serial number, but if it is, it has been through hell and back. everything looks right for a LP Custom. the only thing i would be concerned with is the Headstock, the diamond shaped inlay looks a bit wide, and the gap reveals is not even. i think it is a newer LP that for what ever reason someone has tried to make look old, maybe to get a better price. I can't be absolutely certain that is real or not. that headstock just really bothers me. the ad it self says it is an 05. if it were me, i would not buy it. If you have additional questions, please write." the thing I question is is how sloppy the inlay is, it is too wide and uneven. it just does not look right. I mean, everything else looks correct. And it does NOT look like one built in 2005, it actually DOES have the correct details for a mid to late 70's LPC. Kinda spooky. seriel # does support recent, though. stein Posted September 12, 2015 Share Posted September 12, 2015 I am curious about this guitar, because in 2005, I was not aware of this model, which seems to be built with true and correct specs for the 70's, not 2005. This may indeed be a a particular model, a "reissue" of some sort, rather than a standard production LPC. Having said all that, it's rare I am fooled, but I could very well be by this one. I can't say it's genuine, but it sure looks like it to me. What I would do is try and find this particular model in the catalog from 2005. It isn't '75-'77/ Those serial #s were a decal, at least mid or early '75. I get the idea it doesn't follow the current seriel # scheme, as in it's before Gibson had the date code, etc. The "Made in USA" is throwing me, though.
