sharshall
Hello, I'm trying to determine the build date on a recently acquired L48. The number stamped on the inside of the back is 5628 32. No serial # on headstock. Looks like the neck & sides are mahogany, the back looks like walnut & the front is something else, possibly maple. Any help would be greatly appreciated. L5Larry
This is an odd number and format. My published resources state the L-48 was introduced just after WWII. This is also a blurry period of Gibson numbering systems. It also states that during WWII, and shortly after, Gibson guitars did not have serial numbers OR factory order numbers, and that the use of factory order numbers was not resumed until 1949, and that little information exists on the FON's from '49-'51. From the information furnished, my best "guess" would point toward your L-48 being made during this '49-'51 period. Detailed photos of the guitar, especially the headstock logo and number stamp may help determine better information.
