weldaar
I know that this has been discussed before, but when you drill out the headstock for larger tuners, 3/8" hole, is it better to start from the back of the headstock? I have done this before but i am guessing it was beginners luck. All went smooth. This is not on my guitar so i am concerned a bit. Thanx and Merry Christmas. L5Larry
I would (do) use a tapered "ream", not a drill bit. To use a twist drill to enlarge an already drilled hole has the possibility of causing three or four different kinds of major damage. If you're enlarging the holes only for the bushings, you may need to only work on/from the front side (depending on the thickness of the headstock). Otherwise you work from each side to the middle. jedzep
Good answer, Larry! If your drill bit snags a grain edge you could split the headstock. You need a drill press set-up to actually drill out a new diameter. Ream on.
aliasphobias
L5Larry is spot on. The reamer is the way to go. As you said the first may have been beginners luck. I have seen many things go wrong when taking a drill bit to a guitar, whether it be tuners, end pin jacks, or even installing a strap pin on the heel. Also agree with jedzep drill press if you are going to drill. I appreciate your apprehension when working on another persons instrument. G'luck.
