Brand new riviera

I finally got my new riviera p93 set up and intimated right. It came supposedly set up right but sadly it wouldn't stay in tune with a act of congress so I got on YouTube and found the proper way plus I added a bricksbigsfix on the b70 to help with the extreme string angle.

Has anyone else had this tuning trouble? I really like the guitar but I was to the point of returning it and getting a cheap fender . This is probly a old thread.... Again but I'll go ahead and risk it

I don't own or have I ever played a Riviera, but I do have four guitars with Bigsby's (3 Epi's and a Gretsch). I'll admit to only using it for "subtle" effects, no dive bombing, etc. I have zero tuning issues, but as stated if you do, I'd start with the nut. A roller bridge is probably the next step.

Trade it for a cheap Fender? Puhleeze!!! (I keec Fender, guys, I keed). [biggrin]

Thanks Dennis and all you guys. I was thinking s roller bridge might help a lot too. I greased the nut with pencil lead and helped a lot. All I use a bigsby for is just a tiny it if tremolo effect now and again. I've even seen roller nuts. What's yalls thoughts on them ?

I forgot. The cheap fender as in made in China or worse yet Vietnam ! Lol. I agree. Noooooo way

Whoo, you're heading into tiger country there [biggrin] . I say that as I own a Squire (by Fender - note they actually put their name to it) CV 50's Telecaster Butterescotch Blonde. One heck of a guitar, especially at the price point, very well made and plays superbly. I love it as much as I love my Gibson Les Paul Studio Pro which cost over four time more than I paid for the Squire.

First I love my CV Tele, that ones for life...

Second I really wanted one of those Rivera's but I've come to realize I don't like guitars with 3 pups. I put up with it on my Strat because it's a Strat, but I had 2 really nice PRS' (read Expensive...) with 3 pups and got rid of both of them, 3rd pups always in my way.

Last my new Casino has a Bigsby and it drives me CRAZY! It's not the nut on mine, Bigsby is just stiff and has a crazy string angle, waiting for new softer spring (long story short, Reverend Guitars shipped it and now there's postage due so USPS is holding it hostage) Going to look into the BricksBiggsFix as soon as I post this msg....

Chrome BricksBiggsFix for B70 not in stock, Arrrgggghhhh...........

Riviera's come with two New York style pups no? [crying]

My P93 Riviera was not set up at all when I bought it new a few years ago. I had to lower the bridge, adjust the truss rod and clean the entire fingerboard as it had a black dirty substance that rubbed off on my fingers when I played it. After that it played and sounded fine. No problems with tuning at all. Normally rubbing some pencil lead on the string contact points (i.e. nut, saddles) helps reduce friction if you're having troubles.

Not poking fun at you for not knowing the P93 is made in China, but that made me laugh a whole lot! Some Epi's are Korean and some Indonesian and these in my experience tend to be slightly better made. Nothing wrong with Chinese Squiers either if you have a good one. Btw, SmokeyGhost it's Fender 'Squier' not 'Squire' [smile]

Finally!!!! I got it fixed ! You all each and everyone were correct. It was the nut. I couldn't hear it drag during tuning or a string bend or anything but I was sittin on the edge of my bed looking at it and thinking ... There's gotta be a way to fix this so I happend to think I had a set of tiny little hobby files I'm guessing you'd call em left from when I did a lot of work on Muzzleloading Rifles so I figured what the heck. It's already messed up so I can't hurt it much . I found a file that fit the slots perfectly and I was carefull to just ease it thru gently till it widened the slots and smoothed out the bottom of them. I did the same to the tune o matic bridge saddles and now it actually stays in tune even if I use the bigsby. I don't dive bomb it but I like a little tremolo effect sometimes

I move it maybe a quarter inch at most but evidently that's enough to create drag and pinch a string. Anyway. Thank you one and all for the help and advise getting me fixed and getting thru my hardheadedness.

Excellent news, 357bullfrog. We all want our Epis to play well and have good build quality. Sometimes an extra setup or more is required to achieve this. Epiphone does have the quality to produce really good playing instruments. My perfectly stock Dot needed some setup related work but now plays extraordinarily well. [thumbup]
