Gibson EB-750

Hi everybody!

I’m the owner of a Gibson EB-750 Bass (tobacco sunburst) made in 1991. There are only a few, often contradictory informations about the bass. I first heard about the instrument, when Jamaaladeen Tacuma spoke about it in an interview years ago.

Now the german bass magazine "Bassprofessor" wants to present my bass and I would like to give him the most serious information I can get. Maybe one of you have some further information.

What I know is: The bass is manufactured end of 1991. Mahogany neck, laminated flame maple top and back, two Bartolini PUs with active Bartolini tone control (TCT from 1991). I wondered why an instrument which cries out Jazz and Blues has an active tone control and what could have forced Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Paul Barker to use this instrument. In these days Jamaaladeen Tacuma was - as far as I know - user of a Steinberg bassguitar which seems to be the complete opposite to a hollowbody gibson. And Paul Barker - excuse me, I didn’t ever heard of him - plays bass in the industrial metal band „Ministry“!!!

To cut the matter short, you need to have a lot of fantasy to hear a hollowbody bass in the sound of the instrument. It has a strong balanced tone and - it sounds incredible when you slap it. The reason for this unexpected sound is a massive 13 x 4 x 3 inch (35 x 10 x 8 cm)) block of wood in the center of the body (I would say maple). That makes a rich feeling on the top of your shoulders, about 11 lb (5 kg). A great instrument with an unexpected design! (Later I saw the video of Hole unplugged. Melissa auf der Maur plays a sunburst EB-750 similar to mine. The unplugged context makes (visually) a lot more of sense!)

I read the designer of the bass was Phillip (R.) Jones (luthier in the Gibson Custom Shop in these days, later working for Gruhn Guitars in Nashville and nowadays Relic and Aging specialist for Gibson again. I tried to contact him. Until today without success.

I read the bass was build only 42 times. True?

Why is the type called ba-750 (instead of EB-750) on the little sticker in the inside?

What makes Gibson to make such an instrument?

How many came to Europe?

Ladies and Gentlemen! I would be very lucky about every advice, information and tip! Can anyone contribute to my questions?

Thank you in advance, Vincent
