24 fret Sg

Carmine

Recommended Posts

I've had this model for almost a year now. Out of the 7 SG's I have owned this is by far the most versatile and well put together in terms of craftsmanship. No PC board, just a hand wired rig. The pickup is not an Iommi as listed but a 57 classic plus with no exposed pole pieces. There has been controversy over this and myself and a few others looked under the hood and they are labeled as 57's. Gibson and AMS/ZZounds made a mistake in the specs. I suspected it wasn't an Iommi as it's fairly powerful but not as talked about in an Iommi. The Firebird is incredible and in single coil mode it can summon a Tele from hell!

Your right I do dig it, very much. Nice and wide at the nut. A really great neck altogether. The pickups are really great the firebird especially. Only problem is the nut and the small crack right behind the nut that runs about a half inch behind the low e string and makes open notes buzz.when I put pressure on the back of the neck behind the crack the buzz goes away. I already contacted Zzounds and they are making it right and that's all good. I'm really happy otherwise. Great looking guitar. Love the pickups and I really love the firebird esp. It has probably the most sensitive pick ups and tone knobs that I've ever used. I have a Gibson LP studio and it has 490 498 pups and the 57 blows them away so that's cool.

Oh my! Sorry to hear you got one with an issue. Are they sending a replacement?

Yeah they were really good about it. It is a really nice looking guitar and it does sound great. I'm excited to get the new one.

I got mine from Zzounds too. Let us know how the replacement is and of course take pics please! I've never seen the ebony one in real life.

I certainly will. I just have to figure out how to post them lol. I'm new to forums.

And hey man, thank you for your help and for taking the time out to answer my questions and stuff. Thanks to all of you.

I tried to switch it for the return to the red stain but I would of had to return it in full and then make a new purchase so I stuck with the ebony. I'm ok with that though. The main reason I wanted to do that is a old head at some music store once told me they use the better wood for the models that are stained and put the wood with knots and imperfections and whatnot with the painted models. Plus being able to see that a single slab of wood was used on yours is a beautiful thing.

I really like the tone control on this guitar. I hope the one that comes in is the same way. I have mentioned my LP studio t, the tone knobs aren't very responsive and I think I'm gonna have them switched out along with the pickups. It's hard to explain but you guys in sure know what I mean, you turn the tone knob and you have to turn it past a quarter of the way for anything to happen. After seeing and hearing the way the Sg responded to a fraction of that amount of rotation I was shocked and I want the same for my LP.

Also, is there a way to contact Gibson and find out what the deal is with the pickups in this bad boy? Iommis, or 57's? And what serial numbers have which? That type of info.

The guitar I was sent definitely didn't have iommis. I have a epiphone Sg with the iommi Gibson pups and totally different sound. If they are 57's I want to put 57's in my LP as well.

That looks like a terrific guitar, Carmine.

Not meaning to sound like a complete nincompoop, but what is the norm for an SG, 22 frets?

I have held and played a few SG's in my time, but never actually owned one, so please forgive my ignorance.

[mellow]

Yes I believe normally the have 22 frets with the neck bucker pushed right up close the last fret. That's what gives the Sg its signature sound. That's why some Sg purists would probably steer clear of this model but after having played it I would think they are making a mistake. The neck on this guitar is amazing. Nice and wide at the nut and and amazing tonal variety with the pickup combo.

I wrote them a couple weeks ago and asked them about the pickup question and they didn't respond.... Grrrr! I even supplied my serial number. You can try. You should mention someone else asked and was ignored if you would? Thanks! Here is the link:

Yes I believe normally the have 22 frets with the neck bucker pushed right up close the last fret. That's what gives the Sg its signature sound. ...

That's how the SG Standard, spelled S-G then, was built during the 1970's but in fact without changing the neck pickup position.

My 1978 S-G Standard is one of these: neck humbucker where it always was but due to deeper neck set just at the end of the 22 frets board like with Les Paul guitars. Bridge and tailpiece were shifted towards the lower bout to maintain scale. Some from the early 1970's had the bridge pickup where it was before and thus farther up from the bridge. Most came with the bridge pickup shifted downwards like bridge and tailpiece and therefore had the same pickup positions like Les Paul guitars.

SGs made from 1961 to 1969 and after 1980 have their necks set less deep into the body. They either have a pickguard or an extra cover hiding the neck joint between 22nd fret and neck pickup or its ring if applicable. Models with 24 frets have the same pickup positioning like their sisters with 22 frets.

Interestingly the bridge pickup positions are varying. Some are closer to the bridge than with Les Paul guitars, some about the same.

Countless different models with myriads of specs. Getting an overview of only Gibson SG models from 1961 on is an immeasurable task.

I bought this guitar when they first came out and it did not have an Iommi in it. Measure the dc resistance of the pickup, 57 have about 7.5K + and the Iommi is 13.5K + . I pulled the pickup from the guitar and it does not have the extra magnet and epoxy covering on the back like the Iommi. I called Gibson at that time and fought with them, I did get some one to admit it was a 57 and send me a replacement. I even had AMS send me another and it was the same no Iommi. An interesting thing with mine is that is was a left over 50th Anniversary 24 body that they converted to the AMS 24. It has the predrilled holes for pickup rings and small pick guards and did not have the big route between the pickups. I bought the hardware/plastics and changed her but I changed her back because I like the original looks better. Still a very nice and unique SG. I love the allen holes in the bridge wheels Gibson should out these on all there guitars.

Is there a help type place that will explain how to post pictures anywhere? I figured out the thumbnail thing but now it won't let me post another one because I used too much of my global upload quota limit of space or something????

Help!!!! Please😔.

Try photobucket.com You upload pics from your device on to the site when you make a free account. Then you copy the pic URL codes and paste it here. That's what I do.

Here is an Ebony 24 Limited Run showing it has the 57 Classic in the bridge. I like the 57 Classic actually. Between Gibson and AMS/Zzounds someone messed up the specs and thought it was an Iommi because the 57 is unique in that it has no exposed pole piece covers.

Lol that's really cheap too!!! Someone should jump on that. I would of hit buy now had I not already purchased it. I'm Leary of buying used without playing first anyway. I bought a Mexican strat yesterday for 300 bucks. It has some issues. I need to replace the volume and tone pots but other than that it's cool. Want to change the pups too. My plan is to use her to learn how to change pups and pots myself. Something to work on. Has a really nice neck too.

I'm gonna check out photobucket now. I want to post the collection I have amassed. My girlfriend thinks I'm crazy. She says "how many guitars do you need!!!!" I say "it's the only strat I have baby, therefore it's the only one I have....

Then I get smacked lol.
