JO'C
I had a Custom Shop custom order LP from 2000 that had a 4 digit S/N: Not sure if the one you are looking at is legit but if it is it's a 1999. If you have a pic of the front and rear of the headstock, email to Gibson customer service and they should be able to verify.
Dave F
CS = custom shop 96 = 1996 39 = sequence of production

BigKahune
. I thought it went something like this, but JO'C's post puts it into question - 1990s - CS YRRR where Y is the last digit of the year - "9" in the case of 1999, and RRR is the production rank. 2000s - CS YRRRR where Y is the last digit of the year - "9" in the case of 2009, and RRRR is the production rank. 2010s - CS YXRRRR where Y is the last digit of the year - "6" in the case of 2016. X determines place of manufacture - 0=Nashville, 5=Memphis. And RRRR is the production rank. It would be nice if Gibson would make this clear on their Serials website. Can anybody set straight the years these changes took place? .
JO'C
My other Custom Shop guitars follow those rules except for my 1997 LP Elegant which has no CS but starts with a 7 then a space then 4 digits.
BigKahune
. AFAIK the "CS" serials are for Custom Shop regular production guitars. Gibson Custom uses M YRRR or MYRRR where M is the model, Y is the year and RRR is the production rank. There's other variations of this like YYRRRM and even some old 8 digit serials. .
