SGfool
I recently inherited an older model Gibson SG serial #106445 with the made in the USA stamp under it. as far as I can tell looking at Gibson's site it was manufactured some time around 1963. This was a friend of my fathers who was a big musician and left it to him when he passed away 5-10 years ago, just last year my father passes. I was able to save this Gibson SG and an amp before I older sister (executor of the will) was able to sell everything at a yard sale, and I am now using it to learn guitar. It is clearly a Gibson SG but I can't figure out the model as nothing online even from that time period looks quite like it. the tuners say Deluxe on them. It has a clean back and the plat for the knobs is on the front. I could use some help from more guitar savvy folks in figuring exactly what model it might be and why I can't find any that look quite like it and seems to have a humbucker? (maybe modified by previous owner?). Thanks in advance for any help identifying the model.
L5Larry
Pictured is what has become known as a "Type 3", or 3rd style/3rd generation, SG. This style, with the raised pickguard and front control plate, was made around '71/72. The "Made In USA" stamp also dates it to 1970 or later. The six-digit serial number from this era is completely useless and meaningless in identifying the year or model. Even as a type 3 SG, there is not much documentation on this particular model. I would assume it to be a "SG Junior", but can find no photos or other documentation to support that assumption. As for narrowing down the mfg date, you can check the code numbers on the back of the potentiometers. You're looking for a seven-digit number starting with "137". The next four numbers are what is important, as it will give you the week and year the pots were mfg'd.
SGfool
Thanks for the feedback, I may get to take it apart this weekend and look at the potentiometers.
