Signature Just Got a Lot Shorter

I just edited my signature for the forum and it shrunk by a third! Five of my twelve guitars have been sold off in the last month. I came to my senses and realized there was no point in keeping stuff I don't play much. The one I miss the most will be my 2016 Les Paul Standard. I really didn't play it all that much and I figured its easily replaceable if I change my mind and want another. The other victims: An old Favilla Bros. wall hanger folk guitar that had been in the family for 60 years but was trashed, A weird Japanese ESP Edwards that was beautifully built but had the tone of an electrified cheese grater, A nice Korean Epiphone Les Paul that I never played, and a Korean Ovation acoustic that was pointless because I have a nicer American one. I'm left with two SGs, a G+L Strat, a Tele, a bass, a nylon string acoustic, and a steel string acoustic.

Anyone else ever do a collection purge? Did you end up regretting selling any of them? I'm sure I'll end up with more again in the future, but for now I can use the money more than the guitars.

Yes, and yes. Left the band I was in, sold all my gear but the 12 string, Strat, Marshall Lead 12, an Arion stereo delay, and some distortion box or another. I really miss the Kramer guitar and the SM 57, but not really any of the rest of it.

I buy a Gretsch G5125, and then sell it. Then, I buy another one and then sell it. Really, it's a love/hate relationship I have going with that thing. I've had three and sold three.

Right now, I'm looking for a Gretsch G5125...I can't wait to sell it again!

Yeah, that's like me with Les Pauls. I buy one, I realize I like SGs better, I sell it, repeat. I was doing that with Strats for a while too, but I finally gave up on Fender Strats and found a G&L Legacy which I absolutely love.

I agree. I tried locally first, but only sold one. Must try again. I'd like to keep the Guild 12s and the Dot and use the rest toward a fund for a J-45.

I've never regretted selling a guitar .... so far!

Before buying the Esprit last month, I decided I would have to let another go. Its the Epi Casino Coupe (which I've had less than a year) but the only interest shown in that so far has been a scammer.

I have never done the purge, but I do tend to acquire a guitar every now and then, and then occasionally sell one off (or give one away to a good friend).

The painful losses are when I really need some money, and then have to sell one of the nicer ones.

Oh well.

There's always more where that came from!!

I've not parted with anything (by choice) that I wasn't happy to be part with; thus far it's only been a few old acoustics I bought cheap and sold cheap; the early days guitars. Not the first one - that'll never go. Don't think I could part with anything mentioned in my signature - I love them all too much!

I've been "gathering" for some time now, (20/25 years anyway) I have about 20 at the moment, so I probably could, and I often think that perhaps I should, but I'd only sell those to buy something else. So, really, what's the point?

I admit that some don't get played a lot, while others I use all the time, but when I finally get around to those that are seldom used, I remember what brought me to the purchase, and in the end appreciate that I still have it and didn't sell it.

What can I say, I like guitars, 2, 20, 200, who cares! I like guitars. wait, did I already say that...

Yes, and not really. If I miss one, it would be the Gretsch 6120 Nashville. I loved the sound, but there were just too many things about it I didn't like. It found a better home than I could give it. My next Gretsch will be a Penguin.

Not with guitars (I don't own that many and none of them have ever been worth enough to sell), but I did a huge pedal purge about six years ago. Sold ones I do not use anymore. Most were definitive parts of my sound in the late 90s/early 2000s (Dano Cool Cat Chorus, Rotovibe, Blue Driver) and I want to always look forward in regards to my playing. The only piece of gear I keep kicking myself for selling was my Yardbox fuzz pedal. I did it to finance a Fuzz Factory. Stupid move, even if I could not live without my Fuzz Factory.

Crap, I was hoping to score that Favilla from you.

I've got a bunch I should get rid of. A bunch.

Yeah, I thought about getting back in touch with you about it, but I figured I'd give it a shot on eBay first. I got $150 for it, which was more than fair given its poor condition.

I had around 16 guitars as a teen. Some I hardly ever played. Sold all but two at 26 years old when I married. Then when our son was born, the wife complained about my the other two guitars and my expensive amp as they took up too much room with the small house we had. So I let them go. Dumbest thing I ever did. Wish I had all three back. Must have been true love because I still have her!msp_flapper.gif But, at 60, I started the guitar collection again. Now up to 5 guitars. 3 acoustics, one is a 12 string and two are electric. A Gibson and a Epiph. I would like to get about 3 more.

I used to play 30 years ago and wish I never sold those - a 77 Gibson RD Custom, a 60's era Fender Mustang, an early 90's Les Paul Studio and a few others... So now I don't sell - maybe I'm a packrat - my signature might indicate so. Interestingly as was mentioned in another post I have sold off a few lower dollar acoustics... It's odd I don't get as attached to them (although I'm in love with my two current Taylors). But I have specific uses for each of the electrics - probably not logically justifiable, but I'm OK with that. I do pull every one out to play at least once a month - I think that's what I like about having them - there are stories and memories that come with each. Just my thoughts...
