RevDavidLee Posted August 28, 2016 Share Posted August 28, 2016 My Grandfather Levi lived in San Francisco during the late 60's & early 70's and I had the privilege of seeing Janis Joplin with Big Brother & the Holding Company perform at the Fillmore West during the time I stayed with him out there. I can tell you that my reaction was the same as Mama Cass's was - I could not believe the grit, blues and volume coming out of this relatively small framed white woman. :o I also enjoyed the Haight Ashbury scene and the smell of incense in the air when you got close to the neighborhood, the great stores & small shops throughout that area, beautiful women (yes with flowers in their hair) - I remember a great deal of discovery and enlightenment during my stay there. This is a tape of Jorma Kaukonen and Janis rehearsal recorded in 1964, they did an acoustic act at the time. He may be the most underrated rocker of all time. What an incredible spirit though. To sing like that; to love the music and understand it well enough to want to follow it through. Sure she f***ed up but she was ahead of her time.
