Mickthemiller
I've been looking at Gibson arch tops on line and it seems the high end models don't have book matched backs. Is this so or is it just the way they appear in photographs?
wintermoon
all of the high end Gibsons w/carved backs have always been bookmatched

bobouz
If you're looking at instruments such as the ES-335 & ES-330, most have laminated backs with the outer layer being one piece of maple, rather than book-matched.

To my guess these are rotary cut veneer layers.
kaicho8888
That would be nice to have booked matched, but it's made of ply's with one piece veneer maple. Haven't seen or been aware of any book matched ES production Gibson. Unless, it's the curved out solid piece top/back of some smaller scaled ES body. BigKahune
. Not sure what the the OP was asking about, because using the terms 'archtops' and 'high end' can confuse two separate lines of Gibson guitars. Gibson's high end archtops are like these - http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Archtop.aspx - mostly book matched. Gibson's archtop ES line has mostly lam backs - http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/ES.aspx - a single piece of plywood with no book matching, as has been mentioned. . Haven't seen or been aware of any book matched ES production Gibson. Actuallly, there have been some two-piece front & back vintage ES's produced, and at least one reissue of those. The 2013 ES-330 VOS recreated the two-piece maple front & back seen in the original 1959 model. A little more info on this: 2012 was the first year of the ES-330 VOS, and it was based on '59 specs. I have one of these (natural finish), and the front & back are one-piece. Then at the beginning of the 2013 model year, Gibson changed it to a two-piece front & back to recreate the two-piece originals..... but by the end of 2013, they returned to the one-piece front & back. I'm guessing people didn't much care for the two-piece version. I know I sure didn't!
bobouz
Just brought a zombie thread from 2013 back to life, as it relates directly to this discussion. See "ES 330 VOS - I want one but don't like the 2-piece parts." You'll find me conveying some of the same info as above.
