HKC Posted October 23, 2016 Share Posted October 23, 2016 Hi there I will buy a LP Special (1997) soon and I will probably replace the P100s with P90s. Am I correct in assuming that there are no specific bridge/neck versions so all I have to do is to buy two Gibson P90s, solder a little and I am ready to go. Basically I want a Casino with no feedback issues and this seems to be a good solution. I am aware that the newer ones are born with P90s but I also want a tuneomatic bridge and the reissues come with the wraparound which I'm not crazy about. capmaster Posted October 23, 2016 Share Posted October 23, 2016 Apart from the fact that I would rather do the inverse change, to my informations there are different neck and bridge versions, but they don't seem to sell them separately on the aftermarket. Would be interesting to know what one they sell or if they are miscellaneous in the end. :unsure: They even make separate Dirty Fingers Plus neck and bridge versions - one of the latter is visible in my avatar. The stickers on the bottom tell and the DC resistances confirm that. Into the bargain, either have bridge spacing! Most Gibson pickups are available neck spaced only. Gibson P90s currently available are the same for both positions (which bears out the last post) - but other pickup makers do several different versions. Anyway I have bought the LPS today and I will definately give the P100s a go. They have a little less twang and are a little less dynamic than the P90s but the noise factor may be more important than the other two. The guitar soundwise is way closer to the Casino than any other guitar I have. The Casino is probably a better guitar all together but the LP Special is for gigging and I think it will work great. Did I try P100s before....yes I played an ES295 on a session maybe 2 years ago but it was on a session where the 295 was the perfect choice except the P100s wasn't P90s. As for live gigs the P100s may very well be a better choice. As for "comparing a semihollow with a mahogany". I know what you mean but I find the differences between guitars are very blurred out when you can't hear the guitar acoustically at all and also if you are able to ignore the feel of the guitar. I do quite a bit of studio work and I have many guitars, among them Gibson SG, LP and 335, and when I first got these guitars they sounded almost identical on recordings. Since then I have set them up with different strings, changed pickups in the SG etc and now they sound fairly different but straight out of the factory with the same strings on, they all sounded very alike (recorded). BTW I don't have serious noise issues with my Casino, I have a feedback problem. I read about these things now and again but I am starting to wonder if it has something to do with voltage or the way that power is supplied differently from country to country. I have used the Casino extensively in the studio and not once have I had a serious noise problem. It really puzzles me but maybe it's from a humbucker users perspective that they are noisy. HKC Posted October 26, 2016 Author Share Posted October 26, 2016 Hi again Noone is probably going to read this semi-finished thread but I ran into a guy today who had an explanation about the noisy P90 versus my not noisy one. It is the housing that makes the difference, the metal ones (like on my Casino) don't have the noise issue while the plastic ones does. Since most (if not all) Gibsons come with the plastic ones it explains why the noise is such a big issue for most people on this site. Finally I have read so much bad stuff about the P100 but I have to say that to me they sound fine. I took a while to set them up but having the Casino to A/B with helped a lot and they do sound very familiar. Gibson did not get it is nearly as wrong as many posts indicate.... capmaster Posted October 26, 2016 Share Posted October 26, 2016 Sorry for not having replied recently The biggest guitar surprise of my life has been my Government Series II Explorer - see my avatar. Her electric and thus recorded clean tone is amazingly close to that of a full-size archtop. This is not only my opinion. I had bought her via web, one of three for Germany, and then brought her to the service of my usual dealer since lots of threads in the wood were dull. When the master luthier brought her back, he said with tears in his eyes that her tone was peerless. He added she was more than a substitute for any amplified jazzbox on stage.
