Gibson 446 12-String

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to gather some information on an unusual Gibson: a 446 12-string electric guitar. The guitar shop offering it for sale is well-respected, but has limited information about it, even though it was ostensibly obtained directly from Gibson. I tried e-mailing Gibson customer service some time ago regarding the guitar, but never got a reply...

The guitar is ostensibly a prototype, made in 2004 or 2005, for a model that ultimately never went into production; in fact, the back of the headstock is stamped "PROTOTYPE" underneath the serial number. Information on the internet is also sparse at best; I found an archived posting on another forum that had a cursory discussion about a second one of these that had been purchased by the thread's originator, but had little other information. I'd like to get some idea what the possible value on such a guitar might be, but given there are nearly no others out there it may come down to the old adage that "it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it" -- which was something the other buyer never shared...

I have no previous knowledge of these, but info seems hard to come by. It's a little troubling when even a well-respected shop can't provide much info.

I found this, which looks a little sketchy to say the least: http://www.gibsoncustomguitars.net/2015/08/31/gibson-custom-shop-446-12-string-prototype-used-guitar-35/

I also found this, but it's listed as unavailable: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-custom-12-string-es-446-plaintop--one-of-a-kind-electric-guitar

Thanks, Jim!

Yeah, that's the same information that I found during my web search. The merchant has provided some additional information beyond what was in that listing, but not much. And it seems that Gibson isn't willing to tell either me or the merchant much beyond what's already published... The primary thing I'm trying to determine right now is value; of course the merchant is going to ask for top dollar, and I'm trying to balance that with potential value. That's difficult, to say the least, when there are few examples around...

The guitar you found on the Musician's Friend web site is, I believe, the listing for the guitar that was discussed in the forum thread I'd posted. I presume that thread's originator purchased the guitar from Musician's Friend, but neither is disclosing the sale price... So I'm right back where I started, I'm afraid...
