1970s Gibson SG

Hey all,

New to Gibson and new to this forum. Been learning on a Fender Strat, and just was gifted a beautiful vintage Gibson SG from a family member. Would love some assistance.

I've read through a bunch of posts, and it seems the guitar dater project is very unreliable (if not downright awful). For what it's worth, it suggested this is a 1970-1972, made in Kalamazoo or Nashville...

This website (http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/gibson/catalogues/1973_solidbody_1.php) suggests it might be a 1973 SG Standard.

I feel it it distinctly different than the 1972 designs (http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/gibson/catalogues/1972_solid_body_index.php)

Serial number: 109020

Picture attached.

I tried to do my homework first, but now I need some expertise from you. Let me know what you think, and feel free to ask questions.

Thanks and looking forward to continuing the journey,

Craig F

The guitar pictured is an "SG Standard". This style SG was reintroduced around 1973. The 1XX,XXX serial number suggests a mfg date of 73, 74, or early 75.

The only way to narrow it down any further is by opening up the control cavity a looking for the potentiometer codes. The code number on the back of the pots give the date the pots were made. This will give you a date for which the guitar could NOT have been made prior to, and assumes a general time frame of assembly.

You're looking for what is generally a 7-digit number starting with "137". Post the number(s) here, and someone will explain how to interpret it.
