Been learning on a Fender Strat, and just was gifted a beautiful vintage Gibson SG from a family member. Would love some assistance. I've read through a bunch of posts, and it seems the guitar dater project is very unreliable (if not downright awful). For what it's worth, it suggested this is a 1970-1972, made in Kalamazoo or Nashville... This website (http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/gibson/catalogues/1973_solidbody_1.php) suggests it might be a 1973 SG Standard. I feel it it distinctly different than the 1972 designs (http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/gibson/catalogues/1972_solid_body_index.php) Serial number: 109020 Picture attached. I tried to do my homework first, but now I need some expertise from you. Let me know what you think, and feel free to ask questions. L5Larry Posted November 27, 2016 Share Posted November 27, 2016 The guitar pictured is an "SG Standard". This style SG was reintroduced around 1973. The 1XX,XXX serial number suggests a mfg date of 73, 74, or early 75. The only way to narrow it down any further is by opening up the control cavity a looking for the potentiometer codes. The code number on the back of the pots give the date the pots were made. This will give you a date for which the guitar could NOT have been made prior to, and assumes a general time frame of assembly. You're looking for what is generally a 7-digit number starting with "137". Post the number(s) here, and someone will explain how to interpret it.
