1956 Gibson EB-1 Bass

The first mention I ever saw of this bass was in the book "The Gibson Guitar from 1950" by Ian C. Bishop, c. 1977.

It states "Not all of these had painted-on F-holes". I don't think I've ever actually seen one of these in the flesh.

I've had two of the EB-1 reissues. No "F" holes painted on these. My understanding is that the Hofner Beatle Bass was a cheaper copy of the Gibson bass. In many cases, it would be more valuable due to Paul McCartney playing it.

Jack Bruce had one made a few years before he passed. I'm not sure if this is the same one but I saw it in a film about the making of his final album (though I can't now find it in the edited online promo!) -

"That's a new one on me.. A painted on f hole lol.. "

Play a few Gretch guitars and you'll see I lot of them. 👍

Well F holes or not...

I now really want to make an electric bass that turns into an upright one :D Love that idea...

The most famous player of the Gibson EB-1 who comes to my mind is the late Felix Pappalardi (1939-1983), bassist of Mountain, pictured here with his bandmates Corky Laing (born 1948, on drums) and Leslie West (born 1945, on guitar):
