Any of you guys tried a Godin? This year I've made a pledge to myself that I will not buy any guitars for at least a year, but towards the end of last year I picked up one of the 5th Avenue Kingpin's. What an excellent guitar it is (and made in Canada, which is a bonus too). Compared to a couple of my lower end archtops it really seems in a different league in terms of tone and I would go as far to say it's comparable to some of my higher end Gibson archtops with it's flawless action, fit and finish. Super lightweight for an archtop too!

I checked out some of their other models and they look very appealing as well, like the Montreal and solid body Summit series (see links).

Hi,

I have played several in shops.

I was very interested in the Godin A6 Ultra, and there didn’t seem to be any in the uk at that time. A Godin dealer in Exeter offered to bring one in (from Canada) for me with no obligation on my part.

After a couple of months it arrived and I travelled to Exeter. Sadly, the bridge seemed out of position to the neck and I didn’t buy it for that reason. I did buy a guitar there, just not that one.

But they did have a used Kingpin, which I have to say was an exceptionally fine player. It really was amazing to play. I might have bought that but I was unimpressed with its sound.

Prior to all this I was poised to try a LGX-SA but uncovered some tracking issues and was dissuaded for that reason.

If I find a Godin anywhere now, I always take time to look it over or try it out.

I got a 5th avenue without the kingpin stuff, cut through nice in an acoustic setting, a couple of friends and me recorded this a fun evening. The best acoustic i´ve ever owned, light resonant, easy playing, the only thing is that the bridge hight screews are to long and cut into the palm when you play.

Enjoyed your video Holmis. Certainly sounds good on the video and cuts through the mix well like you say. I've yet to try mine in a band setting, I usually just play solo jazz on it so far, but it's great for other styles too. It's quite different from my other achtops as it's more acoustic sounding than anything, even with the P-90 on mine... more along the lines of the Gibson ES 125 which I think it was inspired by. Interestingly, I found this video a while back comparing it to the ES 125.

Shame you didn't like the sound. I find they have a really lovely old school tone, great for early jazz type stuff, early blues or even Chet style country picking.

I had an A-12 for years, although I rarely played it. It was easily the most playable 12 string I've picked up. It wasn't really good at being an acoustic or an electric though. It was sort of just a weird compromise that didn't really work. I lost my a$$ selling it-I think I only got $250 on eBay.

This guy (Sylvain Luc) uses one of the acoustic hybrid type guitars, like the A-12, I think his is a Multiac similar to the A-6? Certainly doesn't sound like a true acoustic, but has an interesting sound. He only plays Godin from what I've seen/ heard and he sure is an incredible player.

He also makes one of the 5th Avenue Kingpin II's sound incredible. Makes me think I need to practise more!
