P100 alternative

Hi there

Does anybody know of any P100 alternatives. Like many others I absolutely love the P90s but the hum issues are a problem. I don't hate the P100s which I have on a LP Special DC (The top model from the 90s, not faded or anything like that) but they are not as nice as the P90s in my Casino Elitist. The P100s are too hot and also a little too trebly for my liking but like I said, it's not bad, I just wish it had a little more detail and warmth.

So does anybody make a fairly noiseless P90 that sounds like the real deal or will I just have to work with the P100s.

I googled -

http://www.fralinpickups.com/product/p90-hum-cancelling/

http://www.wdmusic.com/stealth_90_noiseless_p90_neck_black_plastic_cover_hp90nb.html

See also; Seymour Duncan......

They are all expensive but I am dreaming of getting myself a set, I like Kent Armstrong pups but would need to hear the others.

I have a LP Custom with P90s.

Best wishes.

As usual this is almost impossible because I have here beside me a Casino with great P90s on (in metal houses so not much hum) and a LP DC with P100s. Both sound fine but I like the Casino better and would like to have similar pickups on the LP DC.

It is not easy to judge differences from videos where they test Lollar vrs Kinman because I have no personal knowledge of either of them although I imagine that the Lollars sound similar to the Casino. I think I may have to find a place where I can actually try out the different pickups myself because I am simply not unhappy enough with the P100s to throw 300 euros after Kinman or someone else.

Thanks for the replies. They made me realise that the internet is very good for finding what's out there but not for actually forming a fair opinion on things that are so very subjective.

Henrik, Are you sure they're P100's? I ask because I have never heard anyone say that P100's are HOT, quite the opposite every one I tried and have (currently a 93' Gibson ES-135) are decidedly weak. For me it's no problem I just crank up the volume on the amp a bit.

I read on one pup maker's site a caution about putting plastic covers on their Casino wound pups, as with plastic covers they're brighter. They say the Casino metal covers help attenuate some of the highs and are a bit mellower than the same pup with plastic covers.

I'm with some other P90 lovers, a bit of noise doesn't bother me at all :-)

Yes they are P100s and they are hot but actually the biggist problem is that they are also too bright which messes with the overdrive tones. I have also read that metal covers take a little bit of high end off so I suppose what I would really be interested in is P90s with black metal covers (not dogear). I not sure if theyn exist though.

The brightness of the P100 is not similar to the plastic P90. I tested a Les Paul with Gibson P90 on and it was much more dynamic and detailed but sadly also noisy.

The P100 sound incredible for jangly stuff but I am really more after making this particular guitar a versatile one.

Thanks for the reply.....I will keep looking

Forgive me, if you've already done this, but have you tried lowering the pickups, further down, from the strings?

That (generally) helps with both lowering the output ("too hot"), slightly, and will make the tone a bit "rounder"

as well...i.e., Not so "bright," etc.

I own 2, 2001 Gibson Double Cut Les Paul Junior Lite's, and both came stock, with P-100's. They still have them.

I've worked with the pickup height adjustment, to get to their "optimum" tone and volume range, and all other

adjustments are with the amp volume & EQ, directly. Worked well, for me! But, as always, your experiences may differ.

Good Luck! [thumbup]

Just quickly looked thru the DiMarzio website. These are their humbucker soap bar P90's and there are others on their site:

DP210 Tone Zone, DP154 DLX Plus, DP209 Super Distortion.

I don't Have any of these. They are in other(humbucker)configurations popular.

I have the Super Distortion 2 in one of my RG's. Love em!
