Dechroming metal parts

Recommended Posts

Hello All.

I found this out by accident.

If You put a chrome-plated part into vinegar, and pour sodium bicarbonate on it, it will remove chrome without trace. You might have to repeat the process several times, as the harsh part of the reaction lasts a few seconds only.

Just curious..... Exactly WHY would you want to REMOVE the chrome off guitar parts, OR anything else for that matter?

I've had stuff chromed and re-chromed (mostly Harley parts), but I've never found the need to "un-chrome" anything.

Perhaps, You want to replate a worn chromed surface, or gold plate it instead.

But, Bence...Wouldn't just buying the proper part, in the color or plating you like, be

as cost effective, and a lot less trouble? In the case of "Vintage" it would be best to

leave it "as is," anyway. So...??? :-k[confused]
