An American friend messaged me on the SongStuff forum asking if I would collaborate on a song for his pal Dave. Dave has just been diagnosed with early onset dementia. It turns out that the unfortunate guy is a churchgoing Christian and had written some lyrics of praise. I was asked to help write music to his lyrics. My friend is a good rock singer and competent guitarist, and though he can handle the singing and recording, he only really does balls-out rock n roll. He asked me to provide a song structure with a rhythm track with melody. I agreed but made it clear that I had almost no understanding of American Christian Rock. I was lucky enough to find 70% of the music immediately. The lyrics had an uneven syllable count and primitive rhyming scheme. It took a morning (yesterday) to conceive the music, record 2 tracks to a 112 bpm stereo drum guide track, save out the WAV and share it on Google Drive. It was a good chance to try out the Variax. I choose a Rickenbacker 360 12 string voice for the rhythm track and went to it. I used the e-tuning facility on the Variax for the first time. I used the ½ tone down tuning (D# G# C# F# C d#) for the verses and concert tuning for the chorus. It’s weird using the e-tuning because you can hear the unchanged acoustic tuning together with the altered tuning coming out of the NFMs. I had to raise the volume to drown out the acoustic sounds. The Ric sounds recorded beautifully with a completely clean and balanced signal. Assuming the tune is suitable and adopted, the hard work is now for my SongStuff mate to complete. Neither of us are claiming credit for the music and Dave’s church is welcome to any gains (unlikely!) from the song. So bizarrely, a couple of heathens are making a Christian Rock tune. Hopefully Dave will get a kick out of it anyway. I bought the Variax earlier this year (traded in my Epi Casino Coupe) as a studio tool. It’s had a pretty good debut. Switchfoot, Dare You To Move Sure, cliche modern rock guitar sounds, cliche acoustic in back. Great drum sound on the recording and it must be a hoot to do that one live. If yer into that sorta thing. In the early 90s I had to come up with music for some (deliberately awful) song lyrics in a play a friend of mine was acting in. It's very satisfying when you know you have fulfilled or even exceeded the brief, so to speak. Hearing the 2 different tunings must be very strange! Pinch Posted April 20, 2017 Share Posted April 20, 2017 I've recorded with a Variax in the past. They're all right if you don't want to spend money on a good mic to mic up an acoustic, I suppose. They sound pretty good. I'm not the best reviewer, though - I don't like playing acoustic guitar, even on a Fender neck (Variax). I'm using an old Boss BR1600 & saved out the data as a single WAV file. It plays but I cant hear anything. I'm waiting to hear back from my co-conspiritor. He more tech savy than me.
