merciful-evans
I always though WOTW should be a period piece. It looks like the BBC are going to make it happen. http://www.theverge.com/2017/5/4/15551306/bbc-the-war-of-the-worlds-tv-series-peter-hartness http://consequenceofsound.net/2017/05/bbc-is-developing-victorian-era-tv-adaptation-of-the-war-of-the-worlds/ Now that more like it :) Victorian sci-fi
sparquelito
Really cool!! If you have never heard it, Jeff Wayne's 1978 classic War Of The Worlds is an epic 2-album masterpiece. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Wayne%27s_Musical_Version_of_The_War_of_the_Worlds Narrated by Sir Richard Burton, and featuring many notable rock artists, including Justin Hayward, Phil Lynott, and David Essex. I don't listen to it often, but when I do, I get lost in it. So good!! :)
pippy
I'm delighted the Beeb are going to set it in its proper time. For anyone who has read the book the subsequent films - though good in their own way - lose quite a bit in their modernisation. Whilst we don't give a second thought to many of the features seen in even the (very enjoyable) '53 film such things as planes, missiles, tanks, walkie-talkies and so on hadn't been invented when the book was written and almost nobody owned such everyday things like cars and the UK telephone network was effectively non-existent. I seem to remember that the narrator trying to make sense of what was actually happening was quite an important part of the book. This quote from the second link in the OP sums the situation up quite well; "...we can't wait to see how utterly frightening an alien invasion looks when there's little to no means of warning anybody about its arrival..." Looking forward to it coming out! Pip.
rct
Hopefully we will get it over here. We need something to make up for the phoning in of the last three Sherlocks. rct
Retired
Never read the books, but I watched both movies and loved them.
LarryUK
The victorian type pieces have really taken off. The series 'Dracula' was good, but was dropped after one series. 'Penny Dreadful' was great, but all of a sudden ended in a weak fizz. In general,TV has gone rubbish. We need good programmes. Do you watch 'Peaky Blinders' in the US? It's based where I grew up. It's just as rough now!
pippy
Just for fun I thought I'd dig out my copy of WotW and will give myself a refresher. I read it fairly recently - as in three or four years ago - but some bits are a bit hazy still. I also had a (successful!) hunt for a CompactCassette of the (in)famous Orson Welles radio broadcast! It was given away as a freebie with a film mag (in May 1995) and, back then, I really wanted to hear what all the fuss was about. Here's the tale of what happened; http://www.history.c...s-scares-nation Pip.
badbluesplayer
When I was a kid that book was pretty scary.

That places your copy at about 1950 because it was first published in 1898. The 2/6 price would confuse anyone pre-decimalisation too (being 2 shillings & sixpence) :) I've got some ancient books around somewhere too. An Aircraft Recognition Manual (pre jet age), a collection of Browning Poems and a couple of Biggles paperbacks.
Pinch
Pip: nice find, that cassette! Always loved the backstory, when Welles frightened the listeners! Only ever saw the Tom Cruise movie, where the only fear factor was how bad it was IMO ;)
AlanH
As well as the Jeff Wayne album I've also got the Jeff Wayne WOTW Live on Stage DVD. Set in the period, both are highly recommend to those only familiar with the aforementioned movies. Here's the whole show on YouTube. Ignore the daft intro from mars that isn't on the album. The start proper is the first Richard Burton part. Link above
Retired
1494605314[/url]' post='1854888']When I was a kid that book was pretty scary. Chuckle. I remember lots of stuff scary as a little kid then watched it again as an adult and couldn't believe why I watched it as a kid. The Blob with. Steve McQueen I thought was scary as a kid. A friend gave me the movie to watch again, so I did and it was really stupid. But I get a kick and a laugh out of them.
