I guess I fell off the wagon

I guess I fell off the wagon. I talked about it over on FB, but hey this is the Gibson place.msp_biggrin.gif

Our areas of interests have been pre 1950 Martin and Gibsons, folk revival era, and 1950s Martins -- so 1950 Gibsons not so much. We do have a 53 J-45 and a 59 LG-1 (which is really folk revival era). So in a weak moment I traded for this. 1954 SJ.

It is a bit less strong than than the Banners and quite a bit less strong than the 30s Js, but overall still a strong guitar.

Let's pick,

A very convincing 1950's Southern Jumbo.

Have to say that the burst points more toward my 1959 J-45 than the 1953 ditto here. My guess is that it's not much like your 53'er either.

And how about the bracing. The thin ones or the thicker ?

The braces are both tapered and scalloped -- like all I have seen between 42 and 53 -- but with a little more wood than the earlier ones.

Best,

Whoa, as nice as it gets. But I am admittedly biased because I love SJs. My favorite Gibson for many years was a 1956 SJ. It took a 1942 J-50 to get it out of my hands. Even then I had nightmares about not having the SJ sitting there. But a few months back I also took a renewed plunge into the post-1949 Gibson pool when I traded my 1946 LG-2 for a 1957 CF-100E. This time absolutely no regrets. I did come roaring back when I snagged a 1935 Capital (which Gibson made for Jenkins Music).

Im sure they have a few vintage 70's models

I had one of those. A well broken in so called Lemon Grove 510. It would have made sour, EA.

But on a side-note, the Dove. Has it swallowed you - how does fly and which pins did you choose ??
